I replaced several hoses and it isn't leaking anymore and it still runs hot

Replace the thermostat . Check your coolant level. Do not run the car hot. More damage such as warped heads and head gasket damage will occur.The intake manifold gaskets can also blow. Bleed the system when refilling with antifreeze/coolant. if the fans are not turning replace the temperature control sensor located at the top of the enging near the thermostat housing.

Bad coolant w/ leaks from many places, overheated and shut off, heater doesnt blow heat anymore


After the engine has reached normal operating temperature, feel both heater hoses going into the firewall. Are both hot? If both are hot, it's probably the door or doors in the heater case not operating from the selector knob on the dash. If only one hose is hot, the coolant is not circulating through the heater core. Look for a water valve in the hoses that is shut. If no valve, crack open the cold line to see if you can start circulation through the core. If neither hose is hot, pull off the inlet to the heater core (it may come from the cylinder head area) and run the engine and check stream flow. It won't spurt out like a garden hose, it should flow out in a smooth even stream, maybe just enough pressure to push a steady stream. If no flow comes out, coolant is low, or there is a circulation problem in the engine, like a kinked hose, a weak water pump...

How to replace heater hose


Let the engine cool. Take off the radiator cap.Remove the drain bung from the bottom of the radiator.If you can't locate the bung, or have a hard time taking it out, then just remove the radiator bottom hose clip and hose.
Depending on which hose you want to replace, you can disconnect it at this point and refit your new one.
Replace the bottom hose if you disconnected that, tighten your radiator drain bung and refill your system with a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze. Even if you live somewhere that doesn't go down to 0 degrees C, then you still need anti freeze as it evens out inner engine temperatures and prevents corrosion build up in the system.
Run the car up to temperature, keeping the internal heater set to the hot position with the fan on minimum.

Top the radiator up continually until there are no more air bubbles coming out of the top.


Replace the cap and keep engine running until the radiator fan cuts in. Then let it all cool back down again with the engine off. Remove cap again and refill.


Roadtest the car and recheck again.


Over the next few days keep an eye out for any fresh leaks and top up the radiator if necessary.


BTW, usually if one hose has failed, then the other isn't far behind. I'd recommend changing both at the same time.

Check the heater hoses that go into the firewall to the heater core, they both should be hot,if only one is hot and the other isn't,then the core is plugged. Remove the hoses at the firewall, buy of hose the same diameter,buy enough length so that you can flush away from the engine compartment, install it on one of the heater core pipes,using a garden hose with a jet sprayer slowly blast water into the hose, until you see clean water coming out from the other pipe. Remove the hose and install it on the other pipe of the heater core and repeat the process,you may have to do it several times to completely unplug it. This is a typical problem with a 3.0, 2 valve taurus,coolant looks brown and rusty. The entire cooling system should be flushed, if it isn't the heater core will plug again.

I am leaking coolant from somewhere. when I run my car, the engine smells like hot coolant. I have checked the oil, and the coolant isn't mixing with the oil. I have read about intake manifold...


First, I am assuming that your vehicle is equipped with the 3.1L V-6 and NOT the 3.8L V-6? (Engine size is really nice to know in situations like this!)

It could be any where in the cooling system. The intake gaskets also like to leak externally. A bad intake gasket does not always mix antifreeze with the oil. Take a flashlight and look for coolant on top and/or down each side of the transmission bell housing. This is VERY common on these engines. It may be leaking just enough to where the exhaust crossover pipe is burning it up (and stinking) before it has a chance to run on the ground. Also look for stains on the intake manifold-to block mating surfaces and on the side of the bell housing that will indicate a leak. if your vehicle is still using Dex-Cool, the stains will be pink. If your coolant has been changed to green antifreeze, the stains will usually be real white or dark green depending on the brand and the severity of the leak.

If there are no leaks or stains in this area, then look around the water pump area for the same things. The radiator or coolant hoses (including heater hoses) could also be leaking. If it is stinking when the engine is hot, then you could get it hot then shut if off and look for steam.

TIP: A bright LED flashlight works really good for locating steam.

ENGINE NOT GOING TO START IF GET TOO HOT FIRST THING I WOULD REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP THEN ADD COOLANT UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL CORRECT THATS WHEN THERMOSTAT OPEN UP AND TOP HOSE HOT.CHECK FOR LEAKING RADIATOR HOSES CHECK TOP RADIATOR HOSE CHECK BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE.CHECK FOR LEAKS AROUND THE RADIATOR LOOK DOWN BELOW COOLANTS FANS CHECK FOR LEAKS AT RADIATOR CORES OR LEAKS AT THE RADIATOR PLASTIC SIDE CONTAINERS. CHECK FOR LEAKS AT WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE AND CHECK FOR LEAKS AT THE HEATER HOSES AROUND ENGINE BLOCK TO THE HEATER CORE HOSES. THERE IS A REASON CAR OVERHEAT.IF CAR OVERHEAT WHILE DRIVING YOU HAVE FAULTY THERMOSTAT OR LEAKING OUT COOLANT OR BLOWN HEAD GASKET.IF ENGINE OVER HEAT WHILE SITTING DURING A LONG IDLING PERIOD.YOU COULD HAVE FAULTY COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR OR FAULTY COOLING FAN FUSE OR RELAY.HOT WIRE COOLANT TO SEE IF IT RUNS IF NO REPLACE FAN MOTOR. I have a 1996 Honda civic, it spits out water at the radiator after running for 10 minutes. What can I do?


If the radiator is leaking, put a bottle of radiator stop leak in it,fill it up the rest of the way with water, tighten cap, and run in idle for 15 to 30 minutes. If the leak is severe or one bottle doesn't work, use two bottles of stop leak and run for 35 minutes.

If it's the radiator cap that's leaking, replace the cap with a new one. Also check to make sure there are no loose cooling hoses.

Safety first: Use extreme caution to never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot, severe burns from escaping hot water could result.

I've had problems with Datsun (later Nissan) engines hanging the closed thermostat until it boiled, then the thermostat released and operated normally. If you increase the small vent hole in the thermostat valve plate a small amount, the problem disappears. It seems that steam from engine operation gathers behind the thermostat sensing bulb and delays opening. The increase in vent hole size lets the steam through and allows the hot water to open the valve. Hope this helps!
