Car started sputtering when going uphill, backfiring and then smoke coming out of tail pipe. i thought i had water in my gas and it is still doing it.

It sounds to me like you have a head gasket leaking. See if you can get a gauge and check each cylinder. Are you using alot of anti freeze?
SOURCE: car runs ruff. Smoke and gas smell out of tailpipe.
chk the trans vacuum modulator. If oil is present in vacuum linem the modulator is defective. Easy inexpensive fix.
SOURCE: my car has white smoke coming from the tail pipe...
It is burning oil. Possibly bad valve seals or worn rings.

Hi: It sounds like you have a Blown Head Gasket or a Cracked Head. But I would bet that its the Head Gasket.Do this Test on your Engine. Remove all the Spark Plugs and Probally should Mark the Wires as you pull them off each Plug..FILL the Radiator ALL the way; Get your buddy or someone to Turn the Key Like Trying to Start it. You need to be Watching where the Plugs came out and Look to See if Your Getting Water And Coolant Out of Any of the Spark Plug Holes. This will Comfirm you have a Blown Head Gasket. Do Both Sides on Both Heads .Also have your Heads Magnafluxed, And Have Them Checked for Warpage.Hope this helped you. Please Reply so I'll know what you found. Vote For my Solutions. I understand it is not running hot yet.But have you checked the antifreeze level. It dont take much antifreeze to make a cloud of white smoke. Also on old cars i worked on they would do this(back fire under load) if the cam lobes were wore down.
the antifreeze level hasnt moved. ive only had this car for about four days. the backfiring is coming from around the intake manifold. it looks like some sort of hose has came loose but i dont know what it could be. its right behind the battery.
Check for a pipe fitting on the intake. It may have pushed the hose off.Can you hear any vacume leaks?take a can of carb cleaner and spray all around the intake and see if you notice any changes in the idle range.you may be able to find a leak that way.
It turned out just to be the plug wires
