Rear wheels lock up

After leaving my car parked for 5 hours or more when i drive andtouch the breaks the rear wheels lock up, i have changed the drums and shoes but it still happens but after a few times of locking up it goes away. also sometimes my abs and trac control work most times they dont

    You might want to have the computer scanned and see if there are any codes. ABS modules are known to exhibit weird braking issues. I had to have mine rebuilt in a '01 Tahoe (as opposed to buying a new one for $1000.00 with no warranty). The rebuilt price was $150.00 and warranted 5 years.

    Go to the rebuilders website and they give instruction for troubleshooting the ABS system. Do a search for ABS repair, Moscow, Iowa.

It sounds like you got yourself some bad wheel cylinders it is common for the wheel to lockup if you have a sticking or stuck wheel cylinders if you do find that this is the problem you should change both of them even if it is only one the other will not last much longer do to the pressure change

Just replaced rear brake shoes--parking brake feels like it is not tight enough when engagaed--


The brake shoes need adjusting. Disengage the parking brake.
Before fitting new shoes you should slack off the parking brake cable completely. Locate the adjuster(just follow the parking brake cable. Undo the locknut and slack off the cable.
Remove the rear wheels and drums again. You will find a screw-in type adjuster between the shoes. Turn the adjuster to increase the distance between the shoes. The left and right wheel's adjusters turn in opposite directions to achieve the same result. Fit the drum to see if it slides over the pads easily. Do so until you start having diffyculty sliding the drum over the shoes. Fit the drum and rotate it. You should not hear any scraping or have any resistance on the drum when it is rotated. Refit the wheels. Test the parking brake. If it is still too slack adjust the cable under the car until you when you engage the parking brake it engages fully after 3-5 clicks.

How to remove rear brake shoes


How to Replace Brake Shoes
(DIY Complexity: Moderate / DIY Time: 3.2 hours)

Parts:
1. Brake Shoe Set

Tools:
1. Combination Wrench Set
2. Floor Jack
3. Jack Stand Set
4. Mallet Hammer
5. Brake Spring Tool
6. Flat Head Screwdriver
7. Needle Nose Pliers
8. Tire Iron
9. Brake Resetting Gauge

Supplies:
1. Brake Cleaner

Steps:
Step 1 * Secure your vehicle on a level surface, making sure your car will not roll or lean when jacked up.
o Tip: Safety Tip:Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or safety shoes.

Step 2 * Break the lug nuts loose but do not remove. Lift up your vehicle using a floor jack.
o Tip: Using an aftermarket floor jack, instead of the original equipment (OE) jack, can make the job easier and safer. Verify the condition of the floor jack before use.

o Tip: Lug nuts fasten the wheel to the hub and may be on very tight. To gain more leverage, use a breaker bar to loosen the nuts.

Step 3 * Secure the vehicle with jack stands on both sides for safety before starting any work. Do not rely on the jack to hold the vehicle up while working.

Step 4 * Remove the lug nuts. Remove the wheels.
o Tip: Make sure the parking brake is released before removing the brake drum.

Step 5 * Remove the brake drum. If necessary, back off the star wheel adjuster.
o Tip: Hit the brake drum with a rubber mallet to break it loose from a rusted hub.

Step 6 * Clean the brake assembly using a“wet wipe method”. This method uses a spray bottle with water and detergent. Do not use compressed air to clean the brakes. Inspect the brake shoes for wear or damage.
o Tip: It is a good idea to leave one side assembled to use as a reference while you work on the other side.

Step 7 * Remove the primary and secondary brake shoe return springs from the anchor pin and brake shoes.
o Tip: The primary spring is connected to the front (primary) brake shoe and the secondary spring is connected to the rear (secondary) brake shoe.

Step 8 * Remove the adjuster cable and spring assembly. Remove the star adjusting screw and thread the adjuster all the way in.

Step 9 * Remove the front brake shoe retainer. Remove the front brake shoe and parking brake link.

Step 10 * Remove the parking brake lever from the rear brake shoe. Remove the rear brake shoe retainer and remove the rear brake shoe.
o Tip: Specialty brake tools are available to make brake shoe removal easier; but it is possible to remove the brake components with pliers.
o Tip: While you have the drum brake assembly apart, pry the outer seal away from the wheel cylinder and check for leaking brake fluid. If any brake fluid is leaking, replace or rebuild the wheel cylinder

Step 11 * Apply white lithium grease to the backing plate contact points.

Step 12 * Install the new brake shoes in the reverse order of removal. Be careful to keep the new brake shoes clean.

Step 13 * Inspect the brake drum and resurface or replace if necessary. Install the brake drum and adjust the brake shoes.
o Tip: There is a slot on the back of the backing plate usually blocked with a rubber grommet. To adjust the brakes, insert a screw driver into the slot and turn the star wheel adjuster. Spin the brake drum and stop adjusting when you feel a slight drag.

Step 14 * Install the wheels. Torque lug nuts to manufacturer’s specifications.

Step 15 * Lower vehicle and test drive to verify repairs.

2002 Silverado right rear wheel locking up.


You will need to have the parking brake adjusted to the minimum clearance possible and double check the shoes & drum while off.

It sounds as though the shoes are loose, they move forward, grab & unil you center the brakes by applying them and then they release until put into a bind again.

These usually don't get adjusted or even looked at since they are hidden inside the brake rotor hub on the rear wheels.

When I apply the brakes on my '02Dakota only the forward brake shoe moves against the drum. Have replaced wheel cylinder but makes no difference. Both shoes move when I loosen adjuster cable. Have this...


you mean parking brake cable? loosen parking brake cables put drums on , and adjust shoes till they lightly drag, now apply brakes a few times and check the adjustment again, if all ok, now adjust park brake cables, you want to adjust so park pedal goes 5-8 clicks till the wheels are "locked up" and the wheels spin free with the park brake off

Brake Shoe: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Raise vehicle and remove rear wheels.
2. Remove and discard spring nuts securing drums to wheel studs.
3. Remove brake drums.
NOTE: If drums prove difficult to remove, retract brake shoes. Remove access plug at the rear of backing plate and back off adjuster screw with
brake tool and screwdriver.
4. Remove U-clip and washer securing adjuster cable to parking brake lever.
5. Remove primary and secondary return springs from anchor pin with brake spring pliers.
6. Remove hold-down springs, retainers and pins with standard retaining spring tool.
7. Install spring clamps on wheel cylinders to hold pistons in place.
8. Remove adjuster lever, adjuster screw and spring.
9. Remove adjuster cable and cable guide.
10. Remove brake shoes and parking brake strut.
11. Disconnect cable from parking brake lever and remove lever.
INSTALLATION
1. Clean support plate with brake cleaner.
2. If new drums are being installed, remove protective coating with carburetor cleaner or brake cleaner.
3. Clean and lubricate anchor pin with light coat of Mopar multi-mileage grease.
4. Apply multi-purpose grease to brake shoe contact surfaces of support plate.
5. Lubricate adjuster screw threads and pivot with spray lube.
6. Attach parking brake lever to secondary brake shoe. Use new washer and U-clip to secure lever.
7. Remove wheel cylinder clamps.
8. Attach parking brake cable to lever.
9. Install brake shoes on support plate. Secure shoes with new hold-down springs, pins and retainers.
10. Install parking brake strut and spring.
11. Install guide plate and adjuster cable on anchor pin.
12. Install primary and secondary return springs.
13. Install adjuster cable guide on secondary shoe.
14. Lubricate and assemble adjuster screw.
15. Install adjuster screw, spring and lever and connect to adjuster cable.
16. Adjust shoes to drum.
17. Install wheel/tire assemblies and lower vehicle.
18. Verify firm brake pedal before moving vehicle.

Raise the Tahoe's rear end on jack stands. Block the front wheels and remove both of the rear wheels. Release the parking brake. Remove the brake drum, cutting off the pressed metal washers with a strong cutting tool.
If the drum won't come off because the drum shoes have worn into the drum, retract the shoes by removing the access plug from the backing plate. Push the lever off the adjuster star wheel with a small screwdriver and turn the star wheel with another screwdriver.
Clean off the entire assembly with break cleaner, using a drain pan to catch the residue. Never blow away brake dust with compressed air. Detach the spring from the adjuster level from within the drum by gripping it Detach the spring from the adjuster level from within the drum by gripping it shoe. Remove the trailing shoe and adjuster lever. Remove the adjuster screw assembly. Pull away the retractor spring and remove the leading shoe. Disconnect the trailing shoe from the parking brake lever.

Clean off the backing plate and lightly lubricate its shoe contact areas with high-temperature grease. Clean the adjuster screw assembly and lubricate the threads and socket end. Inspect the condition of the drum itself. If there are any cracks, score marks, deep scratches or discolored areas that can't be removed with an Emory cloth, have the drum resurfaced at an automotive machine shop.

Attach the new trailing shoe to the parking brake lever, position it on the backing plate and install the retractor spring's end into its hole. Re-install the adjuster screw assembly, making sure it engages with the leading shoe. Lubricate and install the adjuster level on the trailing shoe.
Place the trailing shoe on the backing plate, making sure it properly engages with the adjuster screw assembly, and insert the retractor spring into its hole within the trailing shoe. Place the actuator spring within its hole in the leading shoe, stretch the spring and connect it to the adjuster level.
Install the drum back on the Tahoe. Turn the adjuster screw's star wheel until the drum slips over the shoes without rubbing them. Reconnect the wheels once the brakes are changed on both sides and lower the vehicle.

Good luck and go for a test drive. If you could find a empty parking lot, go in reveres and do a full brake application a 7 to 10 times. This will self adjust the brakes to ensure that both side's are adjusted the same.

Drum Removal
  1. Remove the rear wheel and the tire assembly. Refer to Section 204-04 .
  1. Retract the brake shoes and loosen the brake adjuster screw.

Brakes are very touchy after sitting


I thought the caprice had disk on all wheels?? But it sounds like it's time for the rear brakes to be serviced. If you do have rear drums the pads could be worn and the shoes are slipping and grabing. You can try backing up in a empty parking lot and backing up and giving full brake application. About the 7th application would reset the brakes, if that does not help then the breaks need to be serviced. Good kick

The rear drum brakes:
  • Have internal shoes that expand against the brake drum (1126).
  • Are a single-anchor type.
  • Are actuated by one rear wheel cylinder (2262).
  • Have two pistons in the rear wheel cylinder (2261). One exerts force against the upper end of the primary shoe; the other exerts force against the upper end of the secondary shoe.
  • Adjust rear brake shoes and linings (2200) automatically.
  • Need manual brake adjustment if the adjusters are not operating properly or after the rear brake shoes and linings have been replaced.
When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic fluid pressure forces the pistons in the rear wheel cylinder outward, moving the rear brake shoes and linings against the brake drum.
The rear drum brake system includes the parking brake mechanism. Refer to Section 206-05 .
