In some 1999/2000 Cougars the wire between the battery and the voltage regulator(altenator) had a resistance reading that is too high. Ford has issued an TSB 00-25-6 that has instructions on how to replace this wire. The part # for the replacement wire is
1S8Z-14A411-AA. I'm in Michigan and a local dealer found one for me in South Bend,IN

i had the same problem with flickering lights,it end up being that the hot wire is hitting steiring rod that hits the plug that has 3 wires that hooks 2 the alternater.reruit the hot wire and buy new 3 prong wire plug and the wire that comes off that plug that connects to hot wire is the wire that carges batt,i ran mine all the way to batt by it self and fixed the problem,if u have anymore problems u can contact me ,johnnyjcollins@yahoo.com and i will help u figure it out, john collins

Must be electrical problem

Suggest replacing the the switch for the headlights or the switch for the dimmer...doesn't sound like it's your charging system, but more like a switch. There are probably relays involved too, usually in the Fuse Box, that may be suspect.

Good luck,

Cougar 1999 lights flicker after changing alternator have 14.7 volts on output

Voltage regulator is not doing its job, and it is allowing excessive voltage into the circuit. If you do not address this problem, some light bulbs and LEDs might start to burn out. Either replace the voltage regulator, or modify the circuit between alternator and regulator to match later model cougars, where this problem was solved.

Battery light stays on 2000 mercury cougar with v6 engine battery light stays on

Your alternator isn't putting 14 volts out to the battery. Check the stator wire on the alternator and the 3 wire plug make sure there is no gap on any of the alternator connectors and they are on VERY firm!

Hook up a multimeter inside your car and watch the battery voltage! if under 14volt you got an alternator problem!

I have a 2000 mercury cougar for about a year. Two weeks after I got it the alternator went out. I had it replaced (with a bad one, then had that one replaced). Months later my battery light would come...

body controll module [BCM]or power controll module[PCM],witch ever one feeds the instrument cluster,HAVE BOTH CHECKED FOR DEFAULT TROUBLE CODES, or check electrical harness all the way through for grounded wires that may be causing a short & not blowing fuses,I WOULD CHECK BOTH THE COMPUTERS [BCM] & [PCM] FIRST,MOST ARE FED BY [PCM] TO INSTRUMENT CLUSTER,which controlls the battery light to alternator.

Flickering charge light

my car started running like ****, gauzes on dash went to 0 and then would shoot back to where they should of been. parked car, shut it off and then it wouldnt start back up. jumped it and drove home- the whole time it bucked and spitted and wanted to stall. had the alternator replaced and then immediately the volt light started to flicker- i have left my lights on numerous times which contributed to my needing an alternator so i went and got a new battery. so far so good. it has only been a couple of weeks since all of this happened so it might be a little premature to think that it is solved. but for now it works!
