Question about 1996 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup

Truck will not start.

I have a 1996 chevy s-10 that will not start. I went out to it today to start it and nothing happened. The radio and other lights come on, as well as the fuel pump, but when i try to crank it over nothing happens. I believe the alternator went out. Can anyone help? Thank you.

Thank you very much for your input. Luckly i have a older gmc sonoma thats close to the same year as my truck i use for a parts truck i'll pull the starter off it and try. I can do this right? Their basically the same truck.

  • bowhunter420 Feb 13, 2009

my s-10 has a inline 4 and my sonoma has a v-6. Maybe it is a fuse or something to do with a saftey switch of some sort for the clutch? My s-10 is a 5-speed.

  • bowhunter420 Feb 14, 2009

I think it may be something to do with the clutch, actually whenever you press it in something is not sending a message saying start to the engine. So maybe if i jumper it, it will start. What is that black thing that slides up and down when the clutch is pressed in, its underneath the dash above the clutch pedal? Maybe this needs to be replaced. I checked my battery, its got a full charge, i even put my truck battery on jumper cables and the other end to my bravada, and let my bravada run for 15 mins, still nothing, no click, no winding, nothing. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Lights are good, no dimming at all. I will look at this black thing more tommorrow and try at do what you suggested, and let you know tommorrow. Thank you very much for your help.

No sir, you misunderstood. I was going to yank the starter off my sonoma that is a v-6 and put it in my s-10 that is a inline 4. But now i've realized its probably just the neutral safety switch, seeing how my headlights work and they dont dim, and radio and other lights come on, its just like your not stepping on the clutch pedal before your trying to crank it over. Therefore i might fix it by putting a new neutral safety switch on it. I'll let you know tommorrow. Thank you very much for your input though sir, I appreaciate it very much.

    Thank you very much sir.

I cant get the black thing to unclip? How the do i get it off?

  • bowhunter420 Feb 28, 2009

No, not the neutral safety switch, i got it unplugged and tryed to connect a pieace of wire into two of the four ports, still nothing. Acting the same as before. Does the clutch need to be adjusted? The guy i bought the truck from said he replaced it with a hydraulic clutch two years ago. Maybe the starter went out? Help someone.

If Radio And Lights Come On , But No Crank this What you Look For
Check Battery For Full Charge 12.5 VOLTS
Check For GOOD GROUND @ Battery.
Then Check For Start Trigger Power << This is the Small Wire that Goes to Starter It Comes from Ignition Switch and Is Hot (HAS POWER) Only when Key is In START Position. Check With A TEST LIGHT, If You Have POWER When Key is turned to the START Position Then You Have A STARTER Problem, If NO Power When in Start Position Then You Have A Neutral Safety Switch Problem. If you Find that it is A STARTER Problem, Use A Large HAMMER to SMACK the Starter 2-4 times them try to Start it If it Does Start Then You Truly Know IT IS The Starter. But Really if you Fallow These Directions, You Can Narrow it Down to One of the TWO Components Mentioned here.
N O T E : The ALTERNATORS PURPOSE is to Put Voltage back into Battery that Starter Takes OUT from Starting Engine, And to Provide Power to EVERYTHING after Engine is STARTED if it IS BAD, then The Battery Will BE DEAD. A QUICK Test for it is.>> AFTER Engine is STARTED Take The - NEGATIVE Battery Terminal OFF, IF the Engine Continues to RUN Alternator is GOOD If ENGINE Stops Running Have Alternator REtested. Because Alternator is Supposed to Provide Power to Ignition System and ALL Other Electrical Components Without Battery being Connected. Im thinking that A Starter From A Inline 4 Cyl. Is for 1 NOT Going to Have The Torque You Need for that 6 Cyl. Even if it Physicaly FITS The Windings Are not As Heavy Duty as one In 6 CYL. Worth Checking out I Guess But Dont be suprised if It Has A BIT LESS Kick to it Than Ath Original Starter. I PERSONALY NEVER Go with USED ELECTRICAL Parts. Especialy A Starter BECAUSE A Starter Cav Lieve you Broke DOWN If you Let the Smoke Our Of It. Good Luck !!!!!?!!!!!!

I can't tell you that not knowing what engine you got in the "96 and what engine is in your parts truck. If there both a v6 they will work, i can' tell you if a 4 cyl. will work on a v6 or visa versa.

  • ccn7 Feb 13, 2009

Do you know how to cross the posts on starter to see if its the starter or not, I did not know its a standard shift, you can bypass the switch for the clutch. Just unplug the two wires going to it and hook them together or use a jumper wire to hook them together.

  • ccn7 Feb 14, 2009

That black thing your talking about, is there 2 wires with plugs going to it? If there is than thats the switch you need to jump, unplug them two wires and hook them together, and it should start. thats the clutch safety switch. Tell you what turn your headlights on and turn the key to start, if your lights don't dim than its the clutch safety switch, if they dim alot than its your starter.

I have 1998 Chevy Silverado with over 200,000 miles. One morning I started it up just fine, backed out of the drive way, and it just died. I turned the ignition to off, and turned it back on and parked it....

Check your battery terminals. They may be corroded or just loose. If you get it running again have the battery and charger tested at an Advance or Autozone.

Hope this helps.

The alternator has failed and is not charging the battery. Vehicle has run on battery only until voltage was too low to keep engine running.
