My 1998 BMW 328i the transmission is in a lower gear.

Hi, the gearbox control unit will stay in limp home mode until the fault is cleared by a diagnostic scanner.

u will need to take this to a BMW dealer for factory diagnosis, they are the only ones with the proper test gear to figure out the problem, but most likely the trans will need to be torn down for inspection

Hello.

My first solution would be to change the transmission oil.
