Question about 2000 Jeep Cherokee

2000 Jeep Cherokee Classic - Idle / Start problems

2000 Jeep Cherokee will crank, but will not start unless I press the gas. Also it will not idle at first. I have to hold the gas down for a few minutes and after a while it will idle on its own. Also, once it is idling on its own. I can kill it out and it will start like normal (without having to press the gas).

Also, a few times it has acted like the battery is drained (i.e. the electric locks will make noise but be too weak to unlock, the lights will be dim, and it will barely crank when i turn the key). Once I start it by pressing the gas, it will act as I described above. I bought from a friend and he said a year or so ago. He had the same problem and he tightened the batter cables and it corrected the problem. I cleaned the battery connectors and tightened everything, but this has not helped.

The battery was replaced about a year ago. I bought it from a friend about 6 months ago. It has been doing this for about the last 3 months.

MAKE SHURE THE BATTERY VOLTAGE IS ABOVE 12 VOLTS. THIS VEHICLES WON STAY RUNNING WHEN THE BATTERY IS WEAK. ANOTHER REASON IS THE POST OF THE DOOR LOCKS, LIGHTS DIM AND BARELY TURNS OVER.

My grand cherokee starting very well and turn off by it self

if you can keep it running by pressing on the gas pedal then clean the idle air control valve, IAC.
If, however, it runs for 2 seconds then shuts off and no amount of pressing the gas pedal helps then check your crank position sensor.

Turned the car on, all the systems worked but the car wouldnt turn over. Tapped the gas and it came right on. happened 2 times in the past month.

These jeeps are known for fuelpump problems, the pump allows fuel to drain back into the tank and then when you go to start it it takes a while to start, it will start after the lines fill and preasurize, another problem is the idle air control valve, this valve adjusts the idle and if it fails the jeep may not start unless you step on the gas pedal. hope this helps.

Jeep 2002 grand cherokee dies unless i keep foot on the gas...

The idle relearn needs reset. Keep your foot on the gas at about 900 rpm. Make it idle for about 5-6 minutes. Slowly ease up on the gas until it will idle on it's own, it might take a while. After you get it to idle, it might be idling real low, but on its own, Let it sit and idle until for 20 minutes. After that it should be back to normal. You will have to do this every time you have the battery unhooked for a while.
