Try jumping the X5 with another car. if it starts, then the battery is too weak start the SAV. if it doesn't start while jumping, try moving the transmission lever forward and aft, then back to park and give it a try. if no joy, see if it will start in neutral. i don't believe the brake has to be applied; mine doesn't.

when all else fails, try this site: www.x5world.com , go to forums and either use the search function at the bottom of the page. if search produces no results, then join and ask them. a wealth of info on this site.

My 2002 Jetta TDI wont Crank

Check fuses first. Crank/start fuse. IF that's good. Find the starter and hit it with a hammer or rod/pry bar as some one tries to start it. If it starts, replace the starter. It has a dead spot in it. If it doesn't, try jumping the small wire to the big wire. It will arc, but if it doesn't turn replace the starter. If it does turn, check the small wire for power when turning the key to start. No power, go to the crank fuse and check for power when trying to start, still no power. Then it is a break in the wire from there to the ignition switch. Or the ignition switch is bad.

1998 chevy asto van wont crank or turn over

Turn the headlights on and watch them while the key is turned to start. If the lights go out, one of your cables or connections at battery or starter is not good. If lights dim a lot but stay on, possibly a bad starter, it needs testing. If lights aren't affected by cranking position, turn lights off, pull the small wire off the starter solenoid, hook up a test light to ground and to the solenoid wire. Light should come on when key is held in crank. If it does, likely a bad starter solenoid. If no light, then the start circuit from ignition switch to starter solenoid is not working. Check for power out of ignition switch on the start wire with key in crank, to begin with. If powered, switch is good, need to check if neutral safety switch is good, and then check or swap in a new starter relay.
Post back with any results.
Good luck.

My 2006 BMW 5 series fails to start. Lights and gauges come on, but not even a click when turn key. tried both keys. checked battery. 4 days later tried ignition and car operated normally, starting,...

If you can catch it failing again, test for power on the small wire going to the starter solenoid while someone tries to crank it. If you have no power, check for power at starter relay and trace backwards. If you have power, you have a bad starter. They can have intermittent failures. Hopefully your starter is easy to access, some 3 series and 5 series have the starter mounted under the intake manifold and it is necessary to removed the maifold to replace or test the starter. Good luck, hope this helps.

shorting to start motor will allow the motor to turn but the ignition system is still off.
try with key turned to ignition position.
suspect starter solenoid on starter motor.
suspect fuses maybe there is a fuse which has blown.
suspect ignition key switch maybe defective.

2002 BMW 325CIC WON'T START

It could be a starter problem. When the starter is cold and is already a little worn. it may not turn at the right speed. Try jumping it with another car. If it still turns sluggish. Replace the starter. A battery has to have enough power to crank the car at a good speed. Even if it tested good.It could not be good enough.

Ignition

Sounds like the battery is dead, you have just enough power to have the lights come on, but no cranking of the starter. Try putting the battery on a trickle charger, or hook up jumper cables to another car which is running. Let it run with the jumper cables connected for two mintues before you try and start your car.
