Question about 1987 Toyota Pickup

1 Answer

Starting problems I recently replaced the spark plugs and wires on my 87 toyota truck, I am still encountering hard starts as it takes long to actually spark the fuel mixture, im wondering if there is something wrong in conjunction with how it starts.

The troubleshooting page in the FSM (page FI 11) goes through a series of tests - basically impedance checks on various sensors. You might start there - with trucks this old the dealers are clueless unless you just want to throw parts and money at the problem. Parts are available on Ebay (picked up sensors and and ignitor pack) and use them in trouble shooting. This is not an easy problem to fix however the is a great deal of information available on the Web. My 1987 started this nonsense a few weeks ago and I'm still fighting it. Testing impedence will help prevent replacing parts unnecessarily. I'm down to the Air Mass Flow sensor, Throttle Body and the Circuit Opening Relay. Time and my circuit tester will tell. From there I'll head to the ignitors - maybe look for them on Ebay as well. Hope this helps.

I got a 87 toyota pickup 4x4 22r replace distributor cap rotor plugs wires ignitor and coil and it get sparks when it first turns over then stops getting spark

Would need mo info. When does it stop. If it has spark when cranking but not as soon and key comes out of start position you'll need to look at it as an coil power problem. Need to see if it is getting power when Ignition switch is in run position. Since the coil ground is controlled to make spark, there should always be 12 volts to the coil when switch is in run position. Some older cars, the starter solenoid provides power to the coil when cranking and the ignition switch takes over in run position.

I'd start with a fuel filter. That, and when was last healthy tune up? Plugs, wires, all fluids & filters? I'd do the tune up also, it will give you a good "ground zero" starting point "if" problems continue.

Main cause of mis firing and hard starting

main cause of firing is problem with spark plug, spark plug wire, or ignition coil of your vehicles. try a obd check up. get a detailed report on sensors. then change all spark plug. And if the problem still persists, unplug sparkplug wire one by one while engine is on. then check the difference. usually engine misfires while any plug is disconnected. thanks

1997 toyota starlet glanza v seems to lose power

Have you just started to have this problem recently? could be just some bad fuel. If not than I would lean towards checking or replacing your spark plugs & check spark plug wires for cracks. It could also be your catalytic converter is starting to plug up on you ? Check listed problems first before attempting anything else.
