When u power up the vehicle ABS does a self test(light stays on a few seconds then cuts off) and if it see's a problem will shut off and illuminate the ABS lamp. It will also do a second test on iself when you reach a speed of around 12-15 mph,it will run the pump for a few seconds to check pressure and look at the speed sensors,if it see a problem here it will again shut down and illuminate the ABS light.
Now if the red brake lamp is on then it will shut down because it thinks you have a hydraulic concern and will not try and run ABS if this is the case.
If red brake lamp is on most likely if you have good brakes it is a problem with the float sensor in the master cylinder reservior, maybe its bad or just stuck,or just low on fluid.

I have a 92 ford explorer and the red brake light cuts on with medium braking and under heavy braking the yellow rabs light cuts on as well any idea whats wrong?

this may sound silly but have you checked the fluid level in the master cylinder? They do have a level sensor in there and will cause your symptom, more so under braking or heavy accel, also the e-brake pedal switch can cause this, if the pedal is falling under heavy braking the switch could illuminate the light, then the abs light will come on if vehicle still sees e-brake is on and the is still a speed signal recieved by the abs.

Hello
When was the last time you bled your brake system? Spongy brakes are almost always beacause of air in the lines.

Abs light stays on

i believe you have to have the computers code cleared....try unhooking the battery for 10 minutes......that should clear out the computer.....if not bring to autozone or the local shop that runs odbc2 and tell them to clear the code.

Abs/brakes

one or two things make sure the float in the resivior is not stuck and the wire is pluged up,or make sure you bleed the master cylinder.and also you may have to bleed the brakes as well.hope this helped

if you are getting an intermittent soft pedal you may have a problem with the abs or master cylinder. try unplugging the fuse for the abs and see if the problem goes away. (FYI if you do this your abs light will come on and you will have no abs function until you reinstall the fuse)
