There was a knocking and grinding noise coming from underneath the car, we had a mechanic take a look and his first thought after driving it was that the CV joint had gone on it (but we had just replaced those two months ago), so we replaced the front right CV joint and took it for a test run only to find that the knocking had stopped but there still remains a grind. the mechanic had told us that it could be a bearing in the transmission or something in the transmission for sure... I have no idea what to do
If you had the CV JOINTSreplaced , they both should have lasted for a long time, how much do you trust your mechanic ? always something to consider ! also, the mechanic who replaced the CV'S last time, did he do a good job ? was there a grinding noise then ? did you get a warranty on the previous cv's, I'm not tryin to point any fingers, just sayin, you need to be aware of every move you make, and who you make it with. NOW, go to good transmission shop, have them test drive ,with you in car, and inspect your front end and transmission, its free , good luck

mine did the samething you have check if there is any transmission fluid in your transfer case. because i didn't and i put more in and the grinding went away.
SOURCE: grinding noise while driving.
Possible causes:
a) a brake disc shield is too close to the disc, and it's coming into contact in the circumstances you outline
b) pebbles stuck between the disc shield and the disk
c) dried out wheel bearings
d) worn Universal Joints in the drive shafts
e) worn A/C pump
f) worn alternator
g) worn water pump
Is the noise still present above 15 miles an hour and past 1500 rpm when the clutch is disengaged (i.e. gearbox in neutral?). The answer to this question may help you to pinpoint the source. I know it's stating the obvious but the fact that you're hearing a grinding sound means it's caused by something that is moving relative to something else. Again this should help narrow down the cause.

try to look under vehicle at the lower control arms . When you brake or accelerate the weight of the vehicle goes back and forth . Therefore the bushings wear out . GM does not want a recall , so you have to purchase new bushings . Although , you are better off replacing the entire control are with the new ball joint pressed in already . The price is right too . Approx $150 . look on internet . If you have any problems feel free to email me at [email protected] . Good Luck !

I say it's the CV joints. You have to jack up under the lower A-Arm, to take the spring pressure off of it, to check them.
(Use jack stands, and wheel chocks behind the rear tires. Emergency brake On. Work on a hard level surface. Be SAFE! Trucks can be replaced, YOU cannot!)

we added more transmission fluid to the car, took it for a test drive and the grinding is still there. we put it into neutral over 15km/h with the rpm above 1500 and the noise was still clearly audible, its also palpable on my feet when sitting in the passenger seat (meaning i can feel it under my feet). would the universal joint do that?
ERIK, like I said, take your vehicle to a transmisson shop, for a FREE diagnosis, do you understand ? QUIT messin around, just do it. and quit pouring more trans fluid into your car, if you OVERFILL it you'll have more problems, go to a professional, resolve this problem , take it for another opinion to someone else, also, it COSTS NOTHING to have someone inspect or test drive it, everyone on this site is trying to help you , BUT, now you need to act, do it !!!!!!!!!!!!
