Tapping noise sometimes

My car just started making this tapping noise tonight its seemed to be getting louder at times so I added oil and added anti-freeze it continued to make the noise for about 10 more minutes and then the noise stopped I drove the car to the store with no problem when I got back home and turned the car off and cranked the car back up the noise started again. can anyone help me?

After running for sometime my 4-cyl will also make a tapping noise. I tried thicker oils but that seems to be a temporary solution and when climbing high elevations, thick oil makes it difficult. I will try the belt adjustment as I believe I heard someone else make a similar statement.

Just add oil, or better yet get an oil change, your oil is obviously low, antifreeze is not a fix all.

YOUR PROBLEM IS NORMAL. NO NEED TO EXCITED. JUST CHECK FOR YOUR CAR'S TIMING BELTS. BECAUSE THIS KIND OF NOISE IS MADE ONLY BY THE BELTS ATTACHED WITH YOUR CARS ENGINE. JUST TIGHTEN THE ENGINE MOUNTED BELTS BY YOUR SELF. IF U DONT KNOW HOW TO TIGHT THE BELTS FOLLOW YOUR CARS MANUAL OR JUST GO THE SERVICE STATION AND ASK THEM.

THIS COULD SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM

PLS. RATE MY SOLUTION.

I ran my 2.2 Vauxhall astra very lo on oil, all of a sudden it started making a loud tapping noise coming from what seems like the very top left hand side of the engine, I immediately filled it up with oil...

Yes the noise is the lack of oil to the cams as these will lose the oil pressure first ,these engines are using hydraulic tappets so no doubt the oil was squeezed out which means the tappet gap is too wide ,i think you may be better off just getting another engine from scrap yard ,new timing belt and fitting this engine as no doubt a local garage will try to give you a complicated excuse for a bodgy repair that will not last long, you would need to remove the rocker at the least and have a better look to get some idea of the damage ,if the cams are damaged then its another engine or trade it in quick after adding a can of STP

2004 Navigator 5.4l dohc passenger side lifter tap.

Are you absolutely certain the noise is lifter tap and not an exhaust leak? These are pretty well known for breaking exhaust manifold studs, or even cracking exhaust manifolds. The noise will be present on a cold engine but might go away as the engine heats up and the manifold expands. Maybe that's why it seems to go away after adding additives or changing the oil. It gets just enough heat in the engine to fool you in to thinking the issue was resolved by adding the oil/additive. Are you always adding to a cold engine?

Loud tapping noise comming from motor

Have the noise listened to by a shop, that is by far the best thing to do.

The cars making a loud ticking noise when i press on the gas

If the noise gets louder with the engine rpm's, it is probably a lifter tapping. I would check the oil level. If it in low ( 2 or more quarts) you may be lucky and adding oil to the proper level may eliminate the noise. Good luck Dano

My 2002 Envoy is making a ticking sound that nobody seems to diagnose. ive been told eberything form a lifter to a bad timming chain. Its throwing no codes and runs fine?

will try to help. upper enginr noise can be several things, but i'll try to keep it simple. when was oil last changed and what was weight? ask your self? the lighter the weight in hot weather, the higher the oil pump sends it. don't know how cold it is where you are, but, to assure you get premium top engine lubrication, i do recommend LUCAS OIL TREATMENT BE ADDED TO YOUR NEXT OIL CHANGE, this will take some of your doubt away about top end lubrication. you mat hear LIFTER TAP it very well be a timing chain tapping against the timing chain cover,BUT has it lost power any at all?does it miss or lose power during accelleration?if the timing chain JUMPS TIME it will not start, or if it does, you'll know it for sure. either won't start, or start and you'll have to keep foot on gas with it jumping like crazy! WANT MY RECOMMENDATION? IF IT'S ABOVE FREEZING, RUN 10W30 OIL AND ADD LUCAS OIL TREATMENT W/FRAM OIL FILTER,,,,USE,,CASTROL OIL BELOW FREEZING? USE 5W3O WEIGHT CASTROL OIL WFRAM OIL FILTER AND ADD LUCAS OIL TREATMENT!! THE LIFE OF YOUR MOTOR, DEPENDS ON FRESH OIL AND A GOOD OIL FILTER. AND AS ALWAYS if i have'nt helped or given you the assistance you requested, please repost yor question and an expert will be happy to assist! thank you for choosing fixya.com!!

Engine knocking noise in 2000 saab 9-3 SE?

It's a common problem with these cars i am actually fixing mine as of now. That car is all about oil pressure and when it is low you'll start to get a tap and or what sounds like a knock due to the lifters not having enough pressure. Try taking your oil pan off and check your oil pick up line going from the oil pan to the turbo. A lot of times it gets a lot of sludge build up and makes the pressure little to none. If that looks clear check the slump inside the oil pan and see if that has sludge build up. Well hope this helped
