Starter Grinding Noise, Stays In

I have a 1987 Ford 460 gas engine and the starter makes a horrible noise when i try to start it. I took the transmission out and bought a new starter and watched it engage with just the bellhousing on the engine and it seemed to work just fine but after I put the transmission back in it started making a terrible noise when it turns the flywheel around.

Hi is the ring gear in good condition on the fly wheel ?
also some starters require spacers to space away from the end of the travel of the bendix is the spacing correct?
it seemas very strange that it only makes the noise when the transmission is connected . hope this helps you if not get back to me Lindz

I replaced my starter on my 94 ford ranger. my truck won't start, when it cranks, it makes a loud grinding noise. How can I fix this problem?

When buying starter motors it is essential that the starter pinion teeth are of the same pitch as the flywheel ring gear. Not all starters from the same make fit different engines because of this problem. However I would be checking that I had put the starter in the housing properly as any misalignment will cause your problem

Good indication of a bad starter. Is it just clicking or is it a grinding ugly noise?. The second is definately the starter.

You may need to install what they call shims in between the starter and the flywheel in order to align it correctly with the flywheel
