These vehicles have couple of common causes of no spark. First make sure the cap and rotor arent burnt through. It may take an ohm meter to be certain. The second Ive seen quite often is a little trickier to diagnose. The ignition switch will often times go bad. The best way to find this is to check power at the fuses. If there is no b+ at the fuses with the key on you likely have an ign. switch issue.

First make sure the dist. is turning, then I would check the dist. cap & roter first. After that I would look at the pickup coil and module.

My 1998 chevy blazer died going down the highway, what is wrong?

Multiple possibilities. Will start with easiest/cheapest. You don't mention check engine light (that would give codes), so I'll go with the same issue we've had with newer Blazers. That would be the ECM in the distributor. When ours started going bad, it would cut-off intermittently. Well one day the intermittent was terminal. Anew ECM, for the 2.8 V6 (1987) is approx 45.00. You would have to price it for your vehicle based on year and engine size. The worst case scenario is loss of timing gear. (That happened on our 67 Buick with 300 V8). Another thought is what happened to a friend. He's putzing on down the highway when his 88 Pontiac Grand Am simply quit. His computer had bit the big one. Those are the only things that come to mind, other than running out of gas or your alternator had quit charging your battery and the battery finally lost enough power to spark the plugs.

1986 Toyota 4wd pickup: problem starting

in my experience alot of times what happens when ignition systems get hot from running for a period of time the ignition coil breaks down and weakens when old and worn out then let it cool down for awhile then starts right back up. so look into checking into the coil break down for loss of spark

1988 Chevy Truck suddenly stopped running while running 60 mph down the highway. Just quit. Now the engine turns, but doesn't fire. Tried starting fluid. Won't fire. Check spark, and I have spark. So...

If you're certain you have spark then try the starting fluid again strait into the throttle body with someone immediately starting it. Your compression may be another issue to look at but this is uncommon to stop you while running down the road. You might want to check the compression though. Take off a valve cover to confirm that the valves are still moving to help rule out a broken timing chain.

My Madza died while driving down th highway, felt

If you dont have much money, guessing what parts to change gets expensive. First, you need to verify if it has fuel pressure and spark, that will lead you in the direction to start looking for the problem. Pull 1 spark plug wire off and see if it will jump a 1/2" gap, If so, thats good. If no spark, make sure the cam is turning, you may have a broken timing belt.

Driving down highway when engine just stopped. Cranks, has gas, no repairs lately. Toy 4AF carb engine. Has been burning oil for last 50K miles and now has 180K. I guess things to look for are spark on...

Check the fuel pump, fuel filter and if fuel is getting to carb. If is not fuel problem, then is usually distribution, replace sparks and check distributor.

Shuddering/jerking on highway, pull over, wont start for 30 mins

Last time I had that happen in a car everything blew. I found out the root of the problem was my timing chain, but I can tell you, you don't want to wait to get that checked out in any case or you will end up with a lot more problems.
