Message board states "Bulb Failure Position Light: What is this>
We have a very cryptic message that popped up recently on our 2004 Volvo S60. I cannot see any issue with any light that I have access to. Does anyone know what light or lights may be the cause of the problem? What is a "position" light?

Re: Message board states "Bulb Failure Position Light:...
This a problem with "A" bulb, no real way to find the problem one unless you test the output of each bulb. You will have to replace them one or two at a time. Start with the rear bulbs as they get the most use i.e. brake lights. Sounds strange but, over time a bulb will lose it's strength and the computer picks it up as a bad bulb and sends the message, quite common with these vehicles. I would use quality replacement bulbs or you could be chasing around weak cheaper bulbs for a while. Hope this helps and good luck.

Position Bulb hailure is caused by the rear tail light bulbs, (the message is cryptic at best). I have had to replace my wife's 2006 xc70 about a half a dozen times. the problem I see is due to the holder the bulb sits in. It is a PAIN replace and seat properly so if there is a connectivity issue with the holder and lens assembly you'll get that message. I would typically see it when I hit a bump or stepped on the break. The message would flash intermittently and annoy me no end. Before you put the bulb\holder back in the light assembly, make sure that you apply some bulb grease and also check to make sure that the spring loaded terminals that make the electrical contact are not compressed or bent, if theat are you will continue to get the message even if you replace the bulbs, (becase the bulb was not the problem, the problem was the holder).
the bulb sockets go bad all the time on volvos. look at the bulb base were it slips into the socket you will see a very small little black maek on the wire on the bulb. get a new socket at volvo. they just plug in
Well I am not that familiar with Volvo but I did have one come to our dealership one time with a similar message but I can't really remember what it actually said. The reason for that one was one of the bulbs in the third brake light had blown. I don't know if this may help you but I would start there and yes you should be able to change that.
Bulb position light failure indicates that you have a burned bulb somewhere around the car. Check all of them. Brake lights, parking lights, flasher and so and so.
This is a very common problem with Volvo.
You could alo get this problem eventhough no bulb is burned. If it's the case, test each bulb contact in their socket playing with them. Make sure you put some electric grease on contact replacing the bulbs.
Check if there were a recall for your specific vehicule and if it has been done on yours. I know that during the years, some recalls were adressing this type of problem.
Regarding whistling noise during warm up try to remove oil filling cap during engine is running. if the noise stops it's probably the PCV that is blocked and need to be replaced. If it doesn't fix it, let us know and we will go more in depth.
Hope it helped
the position bulbs are located in the trunk and you access them the same way you access the tail lights im not sure what the bulb does but its a 10 dollar fix. FYI when you replace the bulb the message center will still tell you that it has failed you have to take it to the dealer to have them to erase the message (i just left mine it seemed a waist of money)
