Question about 1986 GMC Safari
Hi there, I have a 86 safari and my gas guage is stuck on full. Once in a while it'll will work for a day then go back to full. I don't know what it could be but I really need it fixed as I drive my baby around. Any ideas, cheaper ideas? Also my interior lights are not working but the fuse is fine can't figure that one out either not really a biggie though because I don't drive too much at night but help would be appreciated. Thanks
Fuel Giage is Controled By A Reostatic Sending Unit In the Tank that Has A FLOAT to Fallow the Hight of Fuel in The Tank If it Gets Stuck This is what will Happens. I would Advise you to Replace it With A NEW ONE from Dealership They ARE a BIT PRICEY But given its Usefullness its Well Worth it Especialy With a Baby Riding along lots.
And The Exterior Lights This is Fairly Simple as there is A PARK LIGHT > Fuse and if it is Good Chances are your Headlight Switch is Bad.

Your fuel sending unit is bad. This is an electronic component inside of the gas tank. Many times the metal bar will rust and get stuck while there may be nothing wrong with the actual electronics, which is what it sounds like you have here. There is no cheap alternative to fix the problem correctly, however you can beat on the outside of the gas tank and it may free up the arm that is rusted.
