Is over drive supposed to be used in the city or only high way

When in Overdrive the output shaft of the transmission will turn faster than the engine rpm. So overdrive is only useful when on the highway. This will conserve fuel. The option to turn overdrive off on the highway would be useful in mountain driving or pulling a trailer.

Should you drive in overdrive all the time or just out on the highway

Hi. if your driving time consist of many hours in the city, it will not be required for you to use OD. You can use the regular D in the city, or around town. Using the regular D in town will decrease the unnecessary down shifting that will occur in OD if you are driving in town. The OD function is best used on the Highway, during long periods of travel.

It is also best to use the regular D when pulling up hill, or off road travel, as well.

What is the proper way of using overdrive, how and when you have to use it?

If you are not climbing steep hills or towing, leave it on all the time. Turn it off for low speed/high strain driving like towing, climbing and off-roading.

i hope this helps

When should the overdrive button on a 1995 Cougar be utilized and is it harmful to the transmission to drive this car in overdrive in the city?

I don't believe it will hurt anything to use it in the city unless it says not to in the owners manual. Over drive is ment to be used for highway driving. Myself i don't use it in the city just on the open road.

1989 ford ranger- "D" vs overdrive

Overdrive is designed for highway use, to lower the engine's rpm's and conserve fuel. It will not hurt your vehicle to drive it in drive in the city.

Brake maintenance

It really depends on the type of driving you do most of. Highway miles very little wear, mostly city driving alot of wear.
Rule of thumb is usually front around 30,000 and rear around 50,000.

Just want to know which gear is the right gear.

the d with the circle around it is overdrive. the d without the circle is drive. overdrive is designed with highway use in mind. ideally, overdrive is for the highway and drive is for the city.... as far as i understand it.
