I had the same problem on my 2001 GMC Safari. The first thing I did was make sure the spark plug cables were good or not. The first test was quite easy and I did it in the dark. While I had a spray bottle of water in one hand, I cranked the engine with the other and sprayed water on the spark plug wires. I suddenly saw lots of tiny electrical sparks coming from the wires and jumping to anything metal or anything grounded. That told me the wires needed to be changed. So I changed them.
Another time, my car would not start at all. I checked to see if there was the smell of gas when I cranked it and also put the ignition in the before crank position and listed to see if I can hear my fule pump. It makes a whiny noise. Since I didn't hear it, I next checked my fuel pressure. I wore safety glasses for this. I turned the key and pushed the nozzle on the fuel line to see if fuel would squirt out continuously while covering it with a rag. I found out there was no pressure. So I changed the fuel pump and that was it.
Another time my car would stutter on rainy days like the timing was off. What I found was a defective ignition sensor that is located in the rotor laying flat with a 3 wire connectore. Once I replaced it, I never had any problem since. My car has about 160,000 miles and still running strong.
Take care of the vehicle and it will take care of you!!
