Question about 1998 Ford Contour

Does the 1998 Ford Contour have a timing belt or chain?

My reliable, economical and comfortable Contour has 80 thousand miles on it. Does it have a timing chain or a belt? Should I wait or volunteer to have it replaced at this point in time?
Thanks

The 4 cylinder eng (u didn't say what engine u have) has a belt and that should be changed about every 70-80,000 miles, the V6 has a chain, that is good for the life of the engine or until it causes a problem

That motor should have a timing belt. If you really like the vehicle and want it to last for a long, long, time I suggest you get the timing belt replaced in the next 10,000 miles or less. Better yet call the ford dealer and ask the parts guy - not the mechanic- when the interval is to change the belt out. Have year - make - model - auto or stick trani - and the motor size ready and find out.Good Luck

Check the belt idler for bad bearing (common problem),and or the chain tensioner with a stethescope, the auto repair will try and sell you a new timming chain, the tensioner can be replaced from the out side of the engine

What maintenance/services should i perform right now? My car has 160,000 miles on it. car was fully serviced at 100,000 and since then i've only changed the oil every 3,000 miles.

fuel filter, air filter, tran fluid filter and change.( if its an auto) transfer case drain and refill, plugs and wires, coolant system drain and refill, thermostat, they claim timing chain/belt, but thats an awful lot of work to get into that.. how long has it been sinse you changed brake pads, rotors, and drums? may want to consider that..hope this kinda gives you a good idea

1998 Chrysler Town Country 3.8L Does it Have Timing Belt Or Chain

your engine does have a timing chain, these are very durable, there is no set maintenence interval for them. you can tell how much chain slack you have by gabbing your crankshaft pulley with both hands and rotating it back and forth to feel the chain tightening, it should be a minimul amount of rotation. you should get well over 200k mi. of service without worry. i hope this answers your questions, or at least sets your mind at ease.

Has a 2004-2006 honda accord 2.2 diesel, timing belt or chain?

Belt is better replace either about every 100.000 or you'll destroy the engine when it goes out

Belt is Better because it's easier to replace, therefore much cheaper

Chain is inside and in the oil bath so harder= more expensive

By the way. dealer says replace every 60K . 100K is a MAXIMUM

1998 Ford Contour Serpintine belt replacement

Simple, look into the belt tension pulley there you will see a square notch. Invest in a breaker bar, since this is a consumable item you may want to replace the belt every so often. The space is limited but in can be done. Stick the socket end on the square notch a push down. You will notice the whole belt loosen. At the same time pull the belt away from any other pully to release entire belt. Reverse process to install, which is what you need since yours already took a ****.
p.s You can pick up a breaker bar relatively cheap ($10-15). I broke a belt tensioner by not using the right tool.

The 1993 929s with a 3.0 liter had a timing belt.I recomend that it be replaced every 80 thousand miles if not sooner. So yes its ready for one.I would say to check the tires first for the vibration.Good Luck!!!
