Question about 1998 Saturn SW

2 Answers

Car won't even turn over. Totally quiet.

Just over a month ago, I made a stop, and when I tried to start my car, it wouldn't turn over. After about half an hr, it started. 3 or 4 days later, it happened again, but this time it took an hr. A week ago monday, it took 5 hrs., and that was the last time my car started.
All my dash lights come on, but there is no sound at all coming from the car. Battery is good, I disconnected the battery to reset the computer, and nothing. I'm not hearing the sound that the people with the 99's were hearing. I tried the thing with key but no luck. I don't have a credit card to get the 'expert' advise so I'm hoping Soneone has a suggestion for me. Thank You.

Funny... I could diagnose this in about ten minutes if I were there!!! But, being here, I'll give you a good guess: likely your starter has gone south... But, make sure that the battery has 12 volts in it, and dosen't just "look OK" Make sure there is power at main lead on starter as well as power at the trigger wire with key turned to start. But you not under there with it unless wheels are blocked and in park.

Could be a million things. Fuel Pump, ECM or just might need new plugs. You need to have a diagnostic test performed at a local service center or Pep Boys to find out the problem.

I have a new battery and alternator and my car today won't start. I tried to jump it and it still wouldn't even turn over. Could it be a belt?

No if its not doing anything at all it could be a bad wiring harness or if ur lucky a bad ignition.

I don't know beans about automatice transmissions and the average person can only check the fluid levels and take it to a transmission shop if it is more serious.
As far as the engine goes, you need to localize the problem because with the other indications it might not be the normal stuff. So, what I would recommend is that you take the serpentine belt off and try to turn the crank with a large wrench (CW only) with the car in neutral. If you can turn it, then it is probably not your engine freezing up. If it won't turn then the transmission is probably not disengaging from the flywheel - maybe the torque converter.

If it does turn over, then you can put the belt back on and try to jump start the car with another vehicle or the boost function on a battery charger. It it starts then you know to look at the charging system - battery, alternator. If it doesn't start then the starter or the starter reley.

My truck has sat for awhile but it boosted off just fine. I t ran for about 10-15 min then died. I tried to start it again nothing happened. I tried to boost it off nothing not even a click. I had lights...

the battery is totally to the point that not enough amps are being received from it,, so a jump won't even help, charge it completely ,, the lights and other items on the car require small amperage and 12 volts,, the starter requires a bunch of amps to turn it over, after you do that ,, check the alternator you can use a meter on the battery posts with the car running, and should have a reading of 13.5 to 14.5 volts

Sounds like it could be a similar issue to what I just went through. My car wouldn't start on two separate occasions after I had refilled my tank. First time happened a little over a month ago, the starter would crank, and crank, but no signs of life in the engine. Tested the spark plugs, I was getting spark, but the ****** wouldn't start.
Had it towed to the dealership, and they said after 4 long attempts, they got it to start. I took it home, and the next morning I couldn't start it again. Towed it back a second time, and it started right up for them. Drove it back home again and a a month later things started acting up again.
A few days ago the wife pulled the car out of the garage, where the car was level, stopped the car on our slanted driveway and when she came back to start it just minutes later, it hesitated, but did turn over. I filled up the tank and the very next morning, I could not start my car again.
Called for a tow from AAA, and the driver said "let me try something". Pulled out a hammer, and wacked the bottom of my gas tank 4 or 5 times. The tow guy gets in, tuns the ignition to engage the fuel pump (didn't turn the key all the way), he does this about 4 times, then the very next turn of the key it starts right up. The driver said it sounded like a bad fuel pump.
I drive the car back to the dealership (this is the third time) and talk to the same guy I had dealt with all along. He calls me later in the day to tell me they finally got it to not start and were able to isolate the problem to the fuel pump sensor. They replaced the fuel pump assembly and I was off and running.
Hope this helps!
