The Batter Is Not Recharging But The Alternator Is Fine...

99 dodge carvan
I have been told I have a electrical short or bad voltage regulator.
The battery is not recharging and the altenator has been tested, its fine.
After driving for over a couple hours the dash board loses all power, only after the van cools down once parked the dash will work again etc..

Sounds as if the printed circuit board on the back of the cluster may have a hair line crack.

The 99 caravan has the voltage regulation handled by the engine control computer. Most of the time (not always) the check engine light will come on while driving or even be on all the time. If the dash works sometimes its not the fuse the battery going low can make the dash go out this is very hard on it. A scanner used for dianostic test will find the problem with the right person useing it. The battery needes tested though as it can be the only problem

Thank you! i have been told that the alternator has an internal voltage regulator? is the voltage reg. located in the brain modual?

The voltage regulator is built directly inside the alternator case. If the regulator fails, you need to replace the alternator.

the ecm does regulate the alternator output. The problem could be in the wiring or the ecm.

Alternater wont charge battery and fusable link on starter keeps burning

Bad voltage regulator. Usually built-into alternator.
Start car and unplug battery, if it dies your alternator is dead. Get new alternator. If car keeps running, get a voltmeter and check voltage coming through - should be higher than 12v but less than 18v. Any other number means your voltage regulator is dead, cheaper to get a new alternator.

Where is the voltage regulator located in 99 merrcury cougar

now days all voltage regulators are incorporated into the alternator. so if you have charging problems it is more then likely the alternator is bad, or needs a rebuild. good-day !

My alternator tested good battery tested good but still the battery light comes and van dies and the wires are grounded good and in great shape we dont know whats going on

Check the earth on the alternator [connect a volt meter between the alt case and the neg batt terminal]
If you read more than half a volt then you got a bad ground on your alternator. Also check the resistance of the main wire going from the alt to the battery[also batt terminals [think simple]

You cannot run an external regulator on this, your only solution is to replace the ECM.

2000 Ford Taurus dies at idle when defrost is on. Defrost off and it will idle fine.

Check your alternator, your putting an electrical load (blower motor for the defrost) on the system and it is not handling the increase in need of electricity. If the alternator is working fine then either the voltage regulator is bad or you have a short in your climate control

Low voltage out of replaced alternator

Possible to have bought a bad alternator.... Try another one..Take advantage of the warranty the bad one came with....But have them check the voltage output on the new one so you KNOW for sure....Also consider issues with your voltage regulator and the possibility of needing a replacement. They are relatively inexpensive so that is the good news....More serious issue that could be addressed is a short somewhere in the harness. I would recommend a full electrical diagnostic to make sure there is not a bad ground....If you'd rather not spend a lot, just check all the wires you can visually.....But keep in mind that the voltage regulator is key and you do not want to spike the computer with inconsistent power levels and surges.
