That seems too easy. Is there anything else it could be? It just stopped working the other day

  • jbfisher Feb 11, 2009

All the electronics work like normal when I turn the key? Would they still work like that even if the switch is bad? I appreciate the help you have given me.

Thanks for your help. The ignition switch was fine, but upon inspection, the metal piece that goes into the switch module was broken. It took me two days to find that piece because they don't sell it by itself. You have to buy the whole steering column if you want to buy that piece. I finally found the piece on a Dodge Neon. Once again, Thank you.

Can't get any easer than that. thats the way they go, one day they work and the next day they don't. But you can do as you want its your transportation.

Let me ask you this, have you tried to start it in neutral? If it dosent turn over in neutral either, its ignition switch, if it turns and starts in neutral than its park neutral switch. But i'am not sure if they are combined switches, or two seperate switches. All your electronics will still work even thought the switch is bad.

Starter making whirring noise.

When you say it won't start you mean it won't crank, right ?

If you have a duralast starter from auto zone, that may be the problem.
Aftermarket brand starters and alternators can be lemons sometimes.
A mechanic would check for voltage at the starter with the key in the on and start positions. Also check the ground connections.
Its possible the starter is not getting full battery voltage for some reason.

start solenoid sounds like the culprit. the start is a breeze to replace. 2-3 bolts and the two power wires. make sure you disconnect the bat. once you have it off the auto parts store should check the starter for free. have them do that befor you buy a new one. also check the fuses if the starter and fuses are good then the ignition is the final link to this puzzle hope this helps

The security system does not disable the starter, it only disables fuel to the engine. In the fuse block under the hood, locate the STARTER relay. Place your hand on this relay and see if it clicks while someone else turns the key to start...if the relay is ok then the starter itself is faulty. Good luck, i hope this helps.

First, make sure you can turn the engine by hand. If you can't then the starter can't turn it either. Have someone else turn the key and look for the source of the click...may be a relay. Go over the starting circuit with a volt meter. Check for power at the starter main terminal and then with the key turned to "start" check for power at the trigger terminal on the starter. Check battery voltage and check relay operation.
You have a neutral safety switch on the transmission if its an automatic and a clutch switch if it's a stick. Check them as well. Make sure battery grounding on fender and block are also clean and secure.
