I have a 2001 (51 plate) VW Golf 1.6SE which was driving fine, allbeit had the 'service now' message for about 300 miles...
Anyway, the engine cut out completely and rolled to a stop with all the lights on the dash... When you try to start the engine, all the lights come on the dash, it bleeps with the service message and thats it...the engine doesnt fire, turn over..no clicking from the alternator..no nothing! just dead...The battery is good and all levels are fine....

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. Is your check engine light on? It is to due with your exhaust. Check to see if oil or any other fluid is leaking on your exhaust. There might be a leak around your O2 sensors.
if and when this problem reoccurs, you need to check if its spark or fuel problem.to check for spark carefully pull off the main lead to the distributor cap[center lead],hold it near the engine with a insulated pliers, have someone crank the engine and see if theres spark.if no spark try another tci unit[common failure] which should be located under the dash near the glove compartment,if its fuel check fuel pump or return valve could be stuck open..cheers
Hi, I have a 2001 polo 1.4 mpi it lackes power when you hit a hill it just dies, It has had new cat, fuel filter, fuel pump and throttle body, but is still the same it just dose not want to give me full rev's?
Hi Nizzy . Sorry to tell you but it sounds like your water pump impeller has fallen/broken off . Depending on your engine code it would be better off changing the cambelt and tensioner at the same time . Regards VW Audi tech
The "oil light" measures the oil pressure in the engine, not the oil level in the sump. I would not drive it an inch until I had it checked by a competent mechanic. New engines are expensive!
