Question about 2005 Volkswagen Passat

2005 Passat TDI wagon sucking oil

Bought the wagon in mid December, was serviced by seller, by Jan 4 had to add 2 quarts oil. Drove 136 miles, had to add 1 quart oil. Drove 148 miles, had to add 2 1/2 quarts oil. Took it to a VW dealership, said we were using wrong oil (Rotella T 15W40) and had probably damaged motor. They changed the oil to Castrol 50501, told us that that was the problem. We asked them to drive it before returning it to us. They drove it 70 miles and said it needed 3/4 qt. of oil, so they replaced the turbocharger at $1800. We drove it 270 miles and it needed 2 1/2 qts oil and we took it back to the dealership. Now they are saying they will replace the valve cover/gasket and CV joints and see if that helps. What is going on? We have never seen an oil leak anywhere or seen any smoke coming out of the exhaust. Where is the oil going? We can smell burnt oil....

Since the dealership said replacing the valve cover/gasket and CV joints was the 2nd step, we asked what the 3rd step was and for them to consider doing that before the $580 2nd step. I feel abused...thanks for your advice/input!

What would a CV joint have to do with oil consumption? the answer ZERO, if the VC gasket was leaking that bad you would have a large puddle of oil under the engine every time you parked it for more than a few minutes, so doubt that is the problem, has the dealer run a clyinder leak down test to determine if the piston rings are sealing properly? that is the next step, sure sounds like they don't know what they are doing and they are guessing, make them do it for free, they changed out the turbo for no reason it seems, u are out $1800! and no change in oil consumption, make them do there job right or get ahold of the dept of consumer affairs for your state and open a case, that will light a fire under there ****.

An image of oil on dash and next to it is min....what does it mean?????

The warning means you're low on oil and you need to top off the oil. Add about 1/4 quart of oil to the engine and check the dipstick. Add oil in 1/4 quart increments until the dipstick indicates the level correct. The dipstick on this car is hard to read, if you're uncertain about the level, just add oil in 1/4 quart increments until the warning goes off. If it goes off, then comes back after only a short time, then add 1/2 quart, and so on. These cars go through about a quart of oil every 5000 - 10000 miles normally (depending on various factors).

Oil warning light on saying oil pressure pump STOP engine Oassat diesel 2.00litre First Reg Nov 2005 mileage 56,5000 approx. On standard servicing schedule not long life

STOP the engine immediately !!! There is an oil pump failure of 2.0 TDI engines !
Remove the oil pan and the oil pump & balancer shafts assembly.

tdisline_448.jpg
Either the shaft driving the pump from the balance shaft rounds off or the balance shaft drive gears eat themselves.
The same issue ... low oil pressure warning light, noisy rattling engine, and the turbo has gone. Diagnosis: oil pump balancer shaft assembly ...

Many Passat show excess chain noise and wear anywhere from 50,000-100,000+ miles. Cars have broken the chains/tensioner as low as 65,000 miles. This is just a range of cars that have been reported, diagnosed, and repaired. The actual statistics on dealer repairs or failures is unknown and I've heard cars over 100,000 miles that, in my opinion as a non mechanic (most mechanics wouldn't recognize this sound and problem either), aren't noisy. From what has been reported, noticeable noise/chain-tensioner wear/greater risk of breaking is around 60,000-150,000 miles. Your case may vary. The most obvious symptom is a rattling loose noise from the oil pan. Unless you listen to a Passat TDI with a tight chain and one with a loose chain, it's hard to describe the difference other than rattling chain noise.
The reason the gear drive oil pump modification was started is because a few mechanics who specialize in TDI have seen many worn oil pump chains/sprockets/tensioners. There will always be a few defective parts that come off the assembly line and all mechanical components like chains wear out sooner or later, but in my opinion, the failure rate is abnormal considering the number of Passat TDI sold versus the number of reported oil pump failures. This does not necessarily mean that every or even most Passat TDI will have this problem, just that the reported failure rate is high enough to consider this part a design failure. Nobody, not even VW-Audi knows the average time between failure for these parts and the percentage of cars that will have this problem, but they changed this design and if you want to not have this specific failure, the only sure way is to swap to the geared module.

How much oil is required when changing the oil and filter in a 1998 VW passat sedan 1.8L turbo? I've also heard that there is a oil slugde problem with those engines, are there any additives or solutions...

1998 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT 1.8L 4-cyl Engine Code AEB/AWM Turbo
Models with 1.8L Engine codes AEB, ATW, AUG, AWM only
use engine oil that is formulated to meet
Volkswagen oil standard VW 502.00
(with viscosity of SAE 5W-40, 5W-30 or 0W-40).

CAPACITIES: Engine, with filter..........3.5 liter To prevent overfilling during oil changes, add 0.5 liter
(0.5 quart) less than capacity shown, start engine, let run
until engine operating temperature is approx. 60 °C (140 °F)
, switch engine off, wait 3 minutes, check dipstick,
fill to full mark as indicated on dipstick (may be more or
less than 0.5 liter (0.5 quart) depending on model).

As for the sludge question, I add Marvel Mystery Oil around 600 miles before i do my oil change. This will clean out the oil pick up screen and oil journals through out the engine, I do this on every oil change and i have over 356,000 miles on my engine. Oil and filter changed every 3,000 miles intervals. Good luck and hope this helps.

What is the expect oil usage of a 2004 Passat ie how much oil should it use per 1000km Thanks

In a "perfect world" you should loose none. It is acceptable to loose (burn)
about 1/2 to 3/4 quart in 2,000-2500 miles.

2005 Chrysler 300 consumes a quart or two of oil every 3,000 mile

It is not normal for a car with 29,000 miles on it to consume this amount of oil in 10,000 miles. We usually change our oil between 3 and 5 thousand miles and thus may not notice small amounts consumed but certainly not 1-2 quarts. It is more likely that you are leaking oil, but if it is burning it, that is a real problem. If the car was pre-owned do a CARFAX. If it was wrecked, find out was was done. If the odometer is correct, this car needs to be inspected by a professional. I can tell you to look for unburned oil in the tailpipe, smoking exhuast, leaks from the oil pan and drain. Change the oil and filter and closely monitor the level.

Oil usage in 2006 passat 2.0 turbo

I had the same problem with my wife's 2006 passat turbo. We lost 2.5 quarts in 3000 miles and the warning light came on. They put us on a 1000 mile oil test and I lost 1.8 more quarts of oil. They finally agreed to replace the rings. Service tech told me that the factory rings are defective, they begin to lead after about 25,000.
