Metal chips/shavings/flakes in oil

I just bought a 1993 Saturn SL. The oil was checked and we were told there are metal chips/shavings/flakes in the oil. I don't know anything about cars and my husband is frustrated. What does this mean. Can anyone help?

metal flakes on the dip stick are not really an issue unless it has gotten to the crank sensor. That would cause the problem that you are talking about. The oil filter is supposed to catch that though.

I have a 03 GMC duramax, change the transmission oil and found metal shavings in the pan. Is this a problem?everything seems to be ok.

Depending on the mileage, some particles are to be expected. There's a lot going on inside an automatic trans. I've even seen large flakes of metal in a pan and the vehicle went for years without issues. Were the shavings brass, aluminum or steel - do you know?

I have a toyota corolla 1993 It has a noice inside the engine and I couldn't find the problem

The metal flakes in the oil is a sure sign of engine failure Where it has happened has to found to decide on the right repair but in reality the motor has to be stripped down and all the oil galleys cleaned and blown out or else any remaining flecks will block a galley and repeat the failure.

I have a new transmission and brakes. also just changed oil. now i am being told i need to change fluid on diferential and metal shavings are coming off the cap. can this be possible? also they told me it...

I think they are taking you for a ride. The differentials should be check every year, but only to add oil. Yes some can die early, but there are differentials out on the road that are 40,50 years old and still running fine. I suggest you find another garage to go to, and next time some one says metal shaving, tell them to let you see and go to the vehicle and have them get some out for you. And if there were shavings, which I have seen, there would also be noise coming from the deferential, a low hum to clanking. To let you know shavings are metal slivers and not the normal wear that looks like gray mud.

Mechanic refused to do oil change on my 1993 cavalier because he said there were "metal shavings in oil"

did he tell you that your engine needs rebuilding ? journal bearings are gone to start and the rest needs to be established and all that is done in rebuilding or replacing engine depending on your choice.
this guy was honest if he told you all that and saved you $$$

My Jeep Liberty sounds like an airplane taking off. It sound like it's coming from the rear. Also there are metal shavings in the gear oil. The dealer told me this was normal. Is this true?

The airplane taking off sound is most likely a hole or gap in your exhaust system. A few metal shavings are not a big problem. You should probably replace that oil to avoid wear but its common to find a few metal shavings in your gear box.

your goign to have to rebuild the engine, if there is metal flake in the oil it has taken the cam rings and rod bearings and pistons, you can get a rebuild kit from www.jcwhitney for $265.00 for engine kit with bearings new pump new lifters cam piston rings and all other parts you will be needed, you will have to bore out engine and replace cam bearings and lifters.

Sl 350 3.5 v8 in 1971 roadster, sits a lot it started blowing smoke under acceleration

Same as american engines, the cylinder walls can get "washed down" from gas where no oil is present on a car that sits which in turn destroys the piston rings and scars the cylinder walls, could also be valve seals if it's smoking under acceleration.
Check oil for fine particulate metal, will look like metal flake.
Letting a car sit is worse than driving the **** out of it.

Metal chips in oil

Something inside the engine is starting to come apart. What exactlly??.....It's hard to say until you start tearing down the engine. Was there any noticable problems with the chain/belt or the sprockets? If you would like to dig into the engine, let me know and I can give you some simpler checks to do. Hope this helps.
