Question about 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Truck

1 Answer

2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Van won't shift into Park, can't remove key from ignition. Problem happened suddenly with no warning 2 days ago. Vehicle runs fine, doesn't start in any gear that it is not supposed to start in. Any advice is appreciated.

With shifter cable removed at transmission end, key is now removed but still can't shift into park.

I have this same problem with my 2002 Ford Explorer. I can't even park in my driveway. I put it in neutral to turn the engine off and can put in into any other gear and put the e brake on, but it still rolls if it's on any surface that isn't completely flat, and of course I can't get my key out of the ignition..annoying! I am going to check out an auto parts store in the morning to see about a shift cable. I hope they can show me how to install a new one.

My guess is the ignition needs to be replaced. check to see if theres a recall for it. 2 years ago on my 2002 alero I found a recall for the flasher switch which was causing intermediate directionals and 2 more for the computer

If you don't do much highway driving with your van you may have a carbon build up try some fuel njctor cleaner and mid grade gas for a tank or two If you go with the fuel additive rev your engine and watch for moisture and carbon from your exhaust contine to do this till exhaust is clear do not over rev ie do not hold it to the floor press he accelerator pedal and release

Key switch does not shut all the way off(sometimes)

sounds like you may need new ignition cylinder with out more info, next time make sure the vehicle is all the way in park that could cause your problem because the shift cable may not be letting trans to fully lock into park but it is most likely the ignition cylinder
