Question about 1999 Volkswagen Beetle
I have 1999 beetle that the lock tumbler came out and now the hatch will not open with key, key fob, or with inside button. With the fob and button you hear the motor run but hatch will not release. I have found some instructions on how to remove the lock, BUT they start with the hatch open. I have not been able to find a way to to open the hatch??????
Check your rear accuator. It is a black box with a brown rod on it. It is located underneath the rear hatch paneling. Hook up 12 volts to it after its out and see if the accuator moves. Don't put the voltage on it very long either.
Assumeing the key does not work and the electric lock has failed, disassembly is required. From the inside, remove the 8 screws holding the plastic on. 4 are above the glass the other 4 (2 each side) may be difficult to get to with the gate shut. Snap off the panel. The snaps may have to be replaced since they frequently no longer hold after removal. Most Checker, Napa or the like have replacements. If the plastic does not come off just pull it back enough to get an arm behind the panel. The idea is to get behind the plastic just enough to get an arm to the linkage. The locking cylinder in located to the right (passenger) side of center and at the bottom of the door. There is a linkage from the cylinder to the gate handle. Manually slide the linkage to the left (driver side). It now should open from the exterior.

U are stuck on this one, it is time to take it to a VW dealer and let them sort it out, I am sure this is not a one time problem and they have fixed it before.
