Question about 1995 Chevrolet Lumina

1 Answer

Digital clock on radio is displayed all the time

My daughter has a 1995 chevy lumina and the clock display stays on 24/7 even when car is turned off with the keys pulled out. If she doesn't drive the car every day the battery goes dead.
I'm going to put a meter on between the battery and the battery cable to monitor the draw. Do you know where I could get the wiring diagram for the radio to see if there is a separate wire that feeds the clock? or I could pull the fuse to the radio and see if that changes the milliamps.
Suggestions welcome.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I didn't fix the problem but I did eliminate it. I went to the fuse box on the passenger side to pull the radio fuse. That didn't clear the display, so I began take each fuse out and checking the display. Eventually, I found the fuse that was feeding that display. The fuse was a 10 amp that was a direct feed to the battery to mantain the clock. The radio works but not the clock. My daughter says she can live with that....she has her cell phone. : )

    Thanks again for responding.

Those Luminas all did that. I ran a taxi fleet for awhile that used Luminas and they all had that clock displayed 24/7. It didn't cause problems though, unless we left other things on, or our battery connections were less than perfect. The side post battery was more problem than you might think. Good luck. TT

Hyundai i30 2013 model. Can not turn the radio / clock off. No key in ignition but radio continues to play. Turn the radio off (push button) and the digital clock displays. Worried about flat battery.

does it stay on even after the door has been opened? If so it is the retained accessory power system and it should shut off after the drivers door is opened. If not look in your owners manual or take it back to the dealer service center for correction.

Car battery problem

The alternator test will likely indicate a charging problem from the alternator that is not keeping the battery charged up.
Regardless of the alternator test, it would be best to do an electrical draw test to determine whether there is an excess drain on the battery. This can be done with an ammeter between the positive terminal and the positive battery post. This test is done with key off, all accessories off, no lights on, etc. There will be a small draw on the battery in all newer vehicles, but it should be in the order of up to 50 milliamps. If you are getting more than 200 milliamps of current draw then there is a problem with an electrical system that will drain the battery over a period of days or weeks. Once you know this is true, the electrical systems can be methodically tested.

Problems after car battery replacement

Sounds to me like you've got a fualty radio. maybe your clock radio was staying on and thats what drained your old battery. I would remove your radio and check the wiring. make sure you don't have any rubbed through wires or anything. If there's no evidence of faulty wiring then try a new cd player. After all, it could be an electrical issue inside your cd player. hope this helps ya out. O and by the way your clock light should be a yellow wire in the back of the head unit i beleive. the yellow wire is constant power from the battery specifically for the clock. you may also want to check your orange wire. that wire is an illumination wire for the radio. hope this helps
