Check engine light volvo 960

Yesterday my check engine light came on. What things should I look for to correct the malfunction? I understand from owners manual that the problem may be emissions related.

Just a little addition to what TaterTodd has said: He is absolutely correct! Just remember though, not to have a code cleared if the diagnostic problem is something you'll need a mechanic to fix! If it is something as simple as a loose gas cap, or if it's something you know you can replace yourself, that's fine, have it cleared. However, if this is sure to need a mechanic, you'll want to leave that code. As a code repeats, or is added to by other codes, a series of data called "freeze frame" data is compiled and saved along with the error. This freeze frame contains important data, such as what the fuel mixture was during the error condition, the engine RPMs, speed the vehicle was travelling, the engine and/or water temperature, how much air the vehicle was getting for combustion, and sometimes even more info. This data could be very helpful to a mechanic or dealership (as a last resort!) in the event they need to do some trouble shooting!

To begin to help you at all. You need to have the "code" read, or extracted from the ECM. A check engine light is your signal that the cars engine management system has recorded a trouble code. These are numbered and reference a multitude of things the computer is monitoring. It can alert you to a potentially serious problem, or to something as simple as a loose or worn out gas cap. No joke, the loose gas cap causes lots of cars to trigger their check engine lights! Usually your friendly oil change shop has tools to at least read and possibly clear these stored codes. First, though, did this happen just after put gas in the tank? Just a thought. Hope this helps. TT

'97 volvo 960, Orange W-mode arrow blinking, then lost power. What is wrong?

The usual cause of this is a bad PNP switch or gear position sensor.
The "W" is flashing because the transmission control module is stuck in the Winter mode. If you are not familiar with sensor, I suggest you go and have the transmission codes read and reset to begin with and then post back the results.

I'd get this looked at immediately, it's not the sort of thing that will go away. I'd start by checking fluid levels in the box.

You probably need to get the codes cleared on the ecu before the engine light will go off. Even after you fix the problem, the computer doesn't know that the problem has been solved until the fault codes have been cleared.

Check engine lite is on:1997 volvo 960 p0705 transmission code

Just because your Check Engine light came on doesn't mean there's something wrong at all. Various Mechanical functions are timed by the Manufacture to signify Servicing required.

Sometimes they're set at 50K miles or more, when the light starts going on, all you have to do is take it to an Authorized Service Shop and they Reset the timer. Most places won't even charge you for doing it unless they find something wrong.

    It's an inline-6, not V-6.
I'd think you could just drop in a 95' i-6 and use the 95' ecu.

Though, I was unaware that there are any changes.. it should have 60-2 on both, as well as camsynch.
