Radiator Electric Cooling Fans never come on - 96 Merc Sable

I have a 96 Mercury Sable with the standard 3.0L engine. Not the HO engine. The two electric cooling fans for the radiator does not run. I have checked the fuse and that is not the problem. I am figuring I have a temperature switch somewhere that is not working. Where can I find it and how can I tell if that is the problem?

Its not the switch unfortunately. this is a motor issue. both motors may need to be replaced. you can purchase the whole assembly from the manufacture or your local parts shop.

Mercury sable 1999 24v dohc wagon how to test radiator cooling fans

Locate the thermal cooling fan switch which is usually mounted in the radiator but is sometimes found mounted at the top of the engine. If the switch has two wires, connecting them together should cause the fans to operate.

If the cooling fan thermal switch has three, four or more wires it would be prudent to study a wiring diagram before bridging any pair of contacts but the principle of operation remains the same except there is more than one fan and/or there is two or more stages of operation (fan speeds).

If the fans operate with manual switching it is necessary to carry out a further test by running the engine until it is hot enough to switch the fans on, by ensuring the heater is turned off and if necessary (in cold weather) masking the radiator.

Ideally but less convenient would be removing the switch and suspending it connected to an ohmmeter or similar in slowly heating water with a thermometer, monitoring the point it switches on and comparing it with specifications.

Generally the thermal switch isn't very expensive and in a case of doubt replacement could be preferable.

Neither radiator fans are coming on. What's the

Check the cooling fan sensor, usually located on the plug in portion where the connector clips into the fan connector. There is usually a thermistor, a componet that tells the engine computer that the engine is too hot, thus the fan will continiously run, this can short out or wear out over time.

Hope helps.

My 2000 mercury sable is over heating after I've replaced my radiator water pump and thermostat after replacing both cooling sensors the fans stopped working

Open the radiator cap with the engine running at temp and look for tiny air bubbles. If you see bubbles you have a blown head gasket.

198 mercury sable cooling fans motor

Cooling fans ( on radiator ) only come on when the engine reaches a certain (hot) temprature. There is a temp sensor threaded into the radiator end reservoir that switches a relay off and on that runs the fans. Either the temp sensor or the relay is probably bad. Normally , those fans will not be on if the car is moving , the air flow from just driving is sufficient to cool the rad. If you stopped and idled for a while , eventually the rad would heat up enough for the fans to come on.
