Re: check engine light, trans not shifting right
This is slippage occurring in the core behind the torch converter. i would check the fluid level fats. if its full, you have a transmission filter blockage. this will need to be repaired before more damage occurs. if its empty, you will need to add some fluid so you can get it to the shop as soon as possible.
a 6ya Mechanic can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US. click here to Talk to a Mechanic (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need. Goodluck!

GM actually wants you to take it to a shop or the dealer. They stopped using a dipstick.
Here is the method - -
Start the engine and allow the engine to idle until the transmission fluid temperature has reached at least 105degF. Depress the brakepedal and move the shift lever through the gear ranges, pausing a few seconds in each range. Return the shift lever to the PARK range.
Remove the fluid vent cap. (red capon drivers side top of trans)
Raise the vehicle on a hoist(or support on jackstands)
. The vehicle must be level, with the engine running and the shift lever in the PARK range.
Remove the transmission oil level control plug(its a small usually 10mmhex bolt on the right/passenger side of trans, below and in front of the right hand axle.)
Check the fluid level. The fluid level should be even with the bottom of the threaded plug hole.
CHECK FOR THE MODULATOR VACUUM LINE THAT RUNS FROM REAR OF ENGINE DOWN TO TRANS. ** ALSO, LISTEN FOR VACUUM LEAK) RECONNECT AND IDLE SHOULD DROP & CAR SHIFT PROPERLY! **ALSO, IF YOU HAVE NOT HAD A TRANS FILTER/FLUID CHANGE....DO THAT AS WELL!
CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL FIRST BUT IT SOUND LIKE YOU NEED A FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE IF TRANSMISSION FILTER STOPPED UP TRANSMISSION PUMP CAN DRAW FLUID THROUGH CLOGGED FILTER.WHEN ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION GET HOT FLUID WILL GET HOT AND THIN ENOUGH TRAVEL THROUGH FILTER SO CAR CAN SHIFT INTO OVER DRIVE.DO A FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
If it shifts normally and then it warms up and goes backwards OK and the check enigine light works and isn't on while driving the trans has the right fluild and it's not low then the trans has bad troble. If the check engine light is on find and fix the reason Speed sensers Theres 3 leaks burnt fluild correct and see if its fixed the engine needs to run right and hit the right temperture as it runs. otherwise an expensivew rebuild is next or a used transmission.
Do you get a check-engine light, or does the transmission O/D light flash? Many times, this is due to a speed sensor on the transmission. When the sensor goes, the transmission has to do default shift timing and it will shift very late. Usually, this will set a code in the onboard computer.
