If it runs "rough", there are a few things that could be going on. Have you ever had the plugs and plug wires changed? Have you ever changed the fuel filter? Have you ever added a carb/fuel injector cleaner to the oil and/or gas on fill-up? It's almost 20 yrs. old. Have you ever changed the transmission fluid? If it has a carb, have you ever had it cleaned or replaced? Have you ever replaced the air filter or had the fuel line checked out? If you intend to keep and drive the car, I would suggest you do all of the above, if you haven't already. Cars are machines. They don't do well if not serviced. I'm not suggesting you haven't done these things, but if you haven't, any one of them, or a combination could be the problem. . .
Most likely the coils. Easiest way to check is swap them with another cylinder, start it, pull the plug wire connecter and if it doesn't change the engine the coil is bad. If it is the injector, then you can check it with an ohm meter. Touch the leads in the injector it should read 11 to 15 ohms. if you need help let me know.
ROUGH IDLING CAN BE CAUSE BY MANY THINGS.I AM LOOKING AT LEAKING VACUUM HOSES OR INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET LEAK.DIRTY FUEL INJECTORS AND WORN ENGINE VALVES WILL CAUSE ROUGH IDLING.ALSO LOW IDLE SPEED CAUSE ENGINE TO RUN ROUGH.
change plug and wire if its been a while most cars have 90000 miles platinum plugs in them.but the wires wear before plugs.so change plugs and wires.+clean fuel injectors .change fuel filter and air filter.if car still run rough your idling to low.have idling check .
WET PLUD W/GOOD COMPRESSION IS USUALLY NO SPARK.YOUR ENGINE HAS 3 IGNITION COILS.EACH COIL CONTROLS 2 SPARK PLUGS.TRACE THE WIRES FROM THE BAD SPUGS BACK TO THE COILS .IF THEY ARE THE SAME COIL THEN U HAVE A BAD ONE OR CONTROL MODULE(UNDER COIL)
A flashing light means there is a serious misfire that increases vehicle emissions, according to the dealer book. But I remember our was corrected after I changed the plugs and wires. That is the cheapest and problem the most commen solution. Then, I might try the EGR valve and gasket, still fairly inexpensive (under $100 for aftermarket, about $110 total for dealer part), and relatively simple to replace. One of those two should do the trick.
The reason the check engine light is flashing instead of on steady is because it is missing bad and the car companies did this to tell you to stop the car as soon as possible to prevent damage. That is the only time the light will flash off and on instead of being on steady.
The cause is a little harder to diagnose. It could be a fouled spark plug, a bad plug wire, an injector, stopped up fuel filter. I can't remember if that car has the distributer or the coil packs but you could have a problem there. If you have never changed the spark plugs or fuel filter, it is well over a hundred thousand miles to do so now. They say to change them at one hundred thousand but 50 to 75 thousand is better and you will get better mileage. The fuel filter needs to be changed every 20 thousand miles now days because of all the cheap gas we have to put in the cars.
This is for mechanics or technicians. If no one out there believes me about the mileage on the fuel filter, then take the filter off and see what comes out the back. Looks like black water to me.
