Question about 1994 Lincoln Mark VIII

Overheating problem im a mechanic and having problem diagnosing the over heating problem with my mark viii i replaced cooling fan water pump thermostat water is not getting into oil, exhaust, not losing water period also is not pushing compression where a blown gasket would bubble in the fill tank now i have no clue all plugs looked good im confused

    yes the fan is running properly i even put it on a toggle to run after i start it i turn fan on and if im in town driving it takes awhile to over heat but if i get into the peddle a little bit then it will run in to the red unless i behave myself if you could call me my number is 574-250-8088

    You said that you have replaced the cooling fan. Is it an electric fan? If so, is the fan coming on?

If the fans are electric fans, check or replace the fan electrical circuit and fan relay.

If fan is driven off the water pump, through a clutch, replace the clutch. Just because it turns, does not mean it has failed.

    Pull the thermostat out and drive it. See if it get's hot then.

    If it does, you got a radiator problem, or another bad pump. Also check that the bottom radiator hose isn't collapsing.

    Any gunk in the radiator? Had that happen to a 97 4.3L V6 Jimmy. Never got it all out.

Connie, Were the radiator,water pump and thermostat replaced to try and fix the over heat issue or as maintenance. Engine overheating can be caused by a lot of things, Leak in cooling system, air in system, bad rad. cap, slipping belt, faulty thermostat or installed upside down, faulty water pump, plugged radiator (inside/outside), collapsing rad hose, faulty cooling fan, leaking head gasket, sludge plugging engine water passages, poorly tuned engine, etc..
Take into a good shop for diagnoses and estimate for repair. Check the attached links,instruction and guides, Good luck

CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL SHOULD BE ON THE FULL MARK ON ENGINE DIP STICK. IF OIL LEVEL IS LOW.LOOK FOR OIL LEAKS UNDERNEATH CAR.IF ENGINE NOT LEAKING OIL CHECK OIL PRESSURE SHOULD BE 22 PSI @ 900 RPM IF NOT OIL PUMP FAULTY OR YOU HAVE WORN ENGINE BEARINGS.IF OIL PRESSURE OKAY YOU COULD HAVE FAULTY OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT. CHECK COOLING FAN TO SEE IF CAR COOLING FANS RUNNING WHILE ENGINE OVERHEATING.IF NO CHECK COOLING FANS RELAY AND FUSE IF ALL IS GOOD ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FAULTY. I have a 1996 honda prelude i have changed everything in the coolant system and it still over heats what could possibly be causing this


im sorry to tell you that after changing all components in cooling system, (Im assuming this included the waterpump?) your problem is most likely being caused from cylinder head gasket failure. Removal of the cylinder head to replace this gasket should only be undertaken by a very mechanically minded person. Good luck.

If the water pump and thermostat have been replaced and the system has been properly refilled and bled , the only thing left is the radiator. If coolant is not flowing through it properly , vehicle will run hot. If your car has overheated to the point of boiling over , your new thermostat may now be damaged again.. As for the fans , they only come on when the coolant reaches a certain temprature. Under normal driving conditions , they would not need to come on while the vehicle is moving , as the air flow from driving down the road would be enough to cool the engine.

Carefully raise the engine RPM above 2000 and observe the Radiator hoses for collapse. Have your cap checked for holding pressure.

The electric fans usually are 2 speed units. Check with Autozone or Oreillys for the relays which switch to high speed. Some rely on a second temp sensor; you may have changed the dash gauge temp switch and not the fan speed temp switch.

Then if no success you need to get the Fan clutch checked with a timing light. The fan clutch is designed to lock at higher temps. It is suppose to slip in cold weather. A mechanic would take a timing light with a RPM scale and compare the crankshaft RPM with the fan RPM to see if the fan clutch is bad.

One of the most common reasons for a vehicle overheating is a stuck thermostat. It can stick or freeze in the closed position blocking the flow of coolant to your engine. The easiest way to check if your thermostat is not open is to feel the upper radiator hose. Once the engine warms up it should become warm. If it does not get hot the thermostat is probably not opening.

A second common cause of overheating is a leak in your vehicle's cooling system. If your vehicle is loosing coolant there will not be enough left in the vehicle to keep it cool. This is easy to diagnose as the radiator will be low on fluid and there will probably be a pool of coolant on the floor of your garage. Look for leaks in the most common places like around hoses and around the welds of your radiator. If you can not find the leak you might need to take it to a shop to have the cooling system pressure tested.

The third cause is a faulty water pump. The water pump is a vital part of your cooling system since it is responsible for circulating coolant through your engine. With a faulty water pump your vehicle will not run for more than a few minutes without overheating.

The fourth cause of overheating is a bad cooling fan. There are two types of fans, electric and mechanical. The electric fan should come on automatically once the vehicle reaches operating temperature or when the A/C is turned on. If it doesn't you should have it replaced. The mechanical fan will run all of the time but has a clutch which makes it turn faster when the engine heats up. With the car turned off the fan should not turn too easily especially when the vehicle is warm. You can also check for signs of leakage from the fan clutch. If you see any problems have it replaced.

The fifth cause of overheating I will talk about is a clogged radiator. Over time the radiator can accumulate deposits of rust and debris. This is especially true if radiator fluid has not been flushed on a regular basis. If you suspect a clogged radiator you should take it to a shop to have it professionally cleaned.

Those are some of the most common cause for vehicle overheating. Vehicle overheating can cause a great deal of damage to your vehicle. If you are experiencing trouble be sure to fix your vehicle or take it to a quality mechanic as soon as possible.

Temperature control


The radiator cap is at the radiator where you refill the radiator with coolant. Unless it is leaking and you hear a hiss. It may not have anything wrong.Neither will the water pump.If the water pump is bad. It has a small hole that will make it start leaking .Check the engine for leaks at the intake or the water pump.You will know where it is leaking. When the thermostat was removed and hopefully replaced , did you bleed the system ? The system has to be bled to remove air pockets. Or the engine will overheat again. Also check that the radiator fan or fans is turning on . If not you may need to replace the temperature control sensor.(TPS)

How is the problem with your mark? Has it been resolved? Is it physically overheating or does it just look like its hot? Have you swapped the sending unit for the coolant temp gauge?
