1999 Cadillac DeVille

Driving down the road and the car engine died. Let is set and cool down, then it started and ran fine. What could be the problem? What is the recommended fix?

VicEngine stalls from time to time when driving. Slip into nuetral and engine will re-start with no difficulty.

Engine will stall from time to time while driving. Immeadiately I can slip to nuetral & engine start instantly. Just returne from a 1000 mile trip with no problems. However a short time after I retuned the problem arose. The original comment about letting engine cool down before restart was not my problem but someone else's. The one solution response from WIZ about the crankshaft sensor may or may not apply. I would appreciate another follow-up response from WIZ.

WIZ thank you for your reponse however I don't understand your statement "your alternator has the problem check it out". Your other suggested fixes are vague...I know the problem is either electrical are fuel but I was hoping for something more specific. Maybe I am expecting too much of an answer but has anyone else had this problem?

Hi there.

When the problem happens you should try at least to understand if it is a fuel problem, or a distribution problem.

Try to see if the car is misfiring, or die suddenly, or if the engine is just losing power as when you get out of petrol.

The best thing to know what the problem is is getting an ECU scan.
This means connecting your car computer unit to a code reader and getting error codes in return. The error codes will tell you where the problem is.

Here is an example of code reader: Actron CP9175 AutoScanner OBD II ...

The thermostat may be stuck in the wrong position. i would run a coolant system test. the CPU will shut down the engine if it recognizes trouble with the coolant system. i would check the electric fan motors as well. they may be out.

It is going to be hard to give you an exact fix. without seeing car. I would lean towards an ignition control module going bad they will do this when get hot it is mounted under coil packs.

Check the engine error codes to determine possible causes. If engine stalls under acceleration or heavy load conditions, check fuel pressure. if engine stall under normal driving conditions, check fuel filter/pickup.

please post results/clarifications.

Thanks for using Fix Ya.

Your alternator has the problem just check it out.

and for stalling IT may be multiple problem related. It may be a lack of maintenace problem, or a loss of fuel or spark problem, or a transmission problem-torque converter or shift solenoid problem

1991 Cadillac DeVille (has 110,000 miles on it) suddenly dies while driving. Starts and idles fine, but shuts off after driving only 1-2 blocks. What's wrong and how do we fix it?

There are many things that can contribute to this problem. It sounds like it may be ignition related. Possibly an ignition control module or ignition coil. The check engine light coming on while driving is the key to finding the problem. The light comes on when the computer finds a problem and will then store it in its memory. Have the codes checked for what the computer has found to be at fault and with a little diagnostics, should lead you to the problem

We need help with an overheating problem on our 1999 Cadillac DeVille. We've replaced many parts and wonder if it may be air in the cooling system. Please help.

Could be.
Has the thermostat been replaced ?
You could run the engine without the radiator cap to see if the system has air pockets.
A restriction in the exhaust could cause the engine to run hotter on the road than on short trips.

Engine dies

It's not your battery. It might be your IAC valve (intake air control valve) or an EGR valve, maybe even a vacuum leak. The battery is fine. Your fuel filter is most likely fine. When the fuel filter plugs, the car will usualy idle ok but will lose power during acceleration.

Set timing mode 1995 cadillac deville

Depending on the trouble codes, it may be the ECM. (computer)
You can have the car scanned for codes or attempt it yourself.
The "set timing mode" is the section of the computer program that you access to change the base timing. It should not show up on the display unless you access it.
