It is the catalytic converter. The heat shield is starting to seperate from the converter. I had the same problem. I had the catalytic converter replaced ($1400). I argued that it should be covered under the emissions control plan (7 yrs, 70k miles). I finally won the battle because the dealer hung their hat on the fact that the heat shield came loose as a result of rust. I reviewed the law in detail and there is no mention of rust negating the replacement under the emissions law.

Good Luck!

Rattle noise when I let go of the accelerator. The faster I go and then slow down, the louder the rattle noise

Have a look at the shrouds around your exhaust system, they are prone to shaking loose and rattle on over run.
Try giving your exhaust a bang ( with your hand when it is cold) and see if it causes the noise . Follow the noise.
Sometimes the baffles fall off inside the muffler and rattle around inside too.

Ringing under hard accel between 3600-4200rpms on 1986 MR2???

It could be engine detonation or knock. If so it is terribly damaging to the engine and must be totally avoided. Try using premium unleaded petrol for a trial, Or add some "ignition control additive" or ad some Methyl Benzene to the fuel. The anti knock sensor should control this but not all cars had these, or yours may have failed.

Acceleration noise

Unless you are hearing an exhaust rattle of some sort, suggest higher octane fuel or check your timing.

A rattling noise from the engine bay

Check the heat shields on the exhaust system. They get loose from the extreme heat fluctuations work loose and rattle. Especially the one between the engine and firewall where the 02 sensor screws in. It probably rattles less after warm up because heat causes expansion which makes it tighter. Hope this helps.

My Toyota Mr2 Spyder is rattling

Pound on the catalytic converter, you will probably find your rattle inside, if so, you will need a new one, also check for any loose clamps or rings that have come loose, just pound on your exhaust with the side of your fist, you should find your rattle, or sometimes the heat sheilds above the exhaust come loose.
