Question about 2004 Buick LeSabre

1 Answer

Speedometer problems The speedometer on our 2004 LeSabre with 20,000 miles on it suddenly became erratic and jumped to 120 MPH and stayed for a few miles, then jumped to 140 MPH. We were driving in a traffic flow of about 60 MPH. After a few miles the needle went completely to the top and dropped all the way down to the right. When starting the car now in idle it again goes up to around 1 120 mph. We have had no recent repairs other then the replacement of the PVC valve. We are no longer in warranty. I would like to know what the likely problem is before taking it to a repair shop. Speed sensor, vacuum hose, loose wire, speedometer cable, or what? I would appreciate any feedback or assistance.

I have the same problem with the speedometer. But also the tach and fuel gauge. I'm told it's in the instrument cluster.

The speedometer on our 2004 LeSabre with 74,000 miles on it suddenly became erratic and jumped to 120 MPH and stayed for a few miles, then jumped to 140 MPH. We were driving in a traffic flow of about 55 MPH. After a few miles the needle went completely to the top and dropped all the way down to the right. The needle stays at 140 mph

we had to have our buick lesabre (2004) speedometer replaced because it showed erratic readings all the way to 140. It cost over 500 dollars. We are now in conversations with Buick customer service to see if they will reimburse us for this problem because there are other people with the same problem

My 2004 Buick LeSabre does not have speedometer problems yet, but I do have the same erractic behavior with the fuel gauge (does not work anymore), the temperature gauge and sometimes the RPM gauge. I have spent $500.00 for some new part in the fuel tank which did not fix it, now am told that it is probably in the instrument cluster. After reading other posts I am wondering if it has something to do with OnStar? I had no problems until I did not renew my OnStar subscription. Any one else out there with the same scenario?

It may be that the speedo cable has come loose at 1 end and will need to be tightened back up. Sorry but not sure where ends are attached on your car.

Take the cable off of the trans. hook back up to speedo. try turning again,if works look at speedo. gear in transmission, if does not work it will be the cable. One bolt and the driven spedo gear will come out look for wear or flat spot.

You most likely have a defective gauge cluster assembly. GM offers repaired clusters for some models, but they can be costly. (300-400bucks)

How to fix a speedometer cable

Well you know it does not have a speedo cable since you replaced the speed sensor in the transmission.
My guess would be a problem with the speedo or cluster.

Corrosion around the positive anode of the battery. Truck will not start, but battery is not dead. Jumped it with my other car. Drove it about 10 miles - herky-jerky for the first three, like it was...

Likely these problems were being caused by your electrical system being abused. You MUST pull the cables off your battery and clean both the battery and cables to shiny clean. Add a touch of vaseline to all parts and hook it all back up.

Both speedometer & tachometer not working, both reading wrong.

There was a recent class action law suit settled with GM for this exact problem. You can google gm speedometer lawsuit and get lots of information. Unforutunately for most people I think the warranty was limited to 7 years and 70,000 miles. Which isn't a lot of miles for most people.

If you car isn't covered by the warranty there is a way to "reset" the speedometer.

You can turn the ignition slowly like you are going to start the engine. There is a very small "dead" space where you will see your guage lights go off.

What you want to do is cycle the ignition switch from off to that dead space. Each time you do it your stuck speedometer will move towards zero about 10 mph. So if its stuck on 40 you will have to cycle it at least 4 times.

At first you will probably actually hit the ignition and the engine will try to start.....just release it and try it again.

I know this because I have a 04 avalanche with 80,0000 miles and it has this problem about twice a month.
