Question about Ford F-150

Open Question

98' F-150 4.6 Hard start when warm

When i start the truck after it has run a while, I have to crank it several times. When I first crank, turns over no start, then turn key off, then recrank, turns over several times, starts and runs fine, runs like a dream all the time, just does this when it has been running for a while. After it cools down, it will start right up. Replaced plugs/wires (needed tune up anyways) problem was there before tune up and still remains, no change. Thanks for your help. Kevin

Ignition module is the likeliest place to look.

SOURCE: 95 F150 wont crank

the starter should be replaced. The solenoid is kikcing the pinion out but there is no contact being made to turn the starter motor. I have the exact same truck and before i changed the starter used the old starter tap trick. Tap the starter casing with a hammer and it should start turning again. hope this was helpful for you. Good luck.

Could be bad electrical part failing as it gets hot. Coils, ignition modules, crank/cam sensors all can do this. Quite common. Check if you have spark to plugs when it fails. If not, start testing parts. Problem is, they will cool and then test ok so this can be hard to find. Start with ignition module which parts stores often test for free. Run test several times to heat the unit up.

Was running rough, then very hard to crank, now won't, but tries. After being toed, cranked after trying several times, but ran rough. When turned off, wouldn't crank. Could it be the gas pump?

ok well if u get it running for a bit then shut it off it is hard to turn over, does it get easier if it is cold if so sounds like timing is off.
if it is just hard to turn over and runs rough all the time check batt level might not be getting enough power, also check alt voltage but i'm leaning toward the timing

I have a hard time starting an 1988 Festiva..I have to crank and

Well it could be valves but it would run rough all the time if that were an issue.
Could be a problem with the choke or something else with the carb.
Is it difficult to start when the engine is warm and cold ?

My car will start hard ln cold weather20d cranks for long time starts then after couple min runs fine starts fine rest of day

I would start by changing spark plugs, if you haven't changed them in a while. If it has been wet there, raining frequently, then maybe spark plug wires too. That would maybe make sense why once it warms up and drys out it will start ok. I am not sure whether Subaru has the typical fuel pump problem or not, on my vehicle that I once had I turned the key on several times to cycle the fuel pump and my car seemed to start better. If that helps, it is just telled you that you better get the fuel pump replaced. Please rate my answer so I get points for it.

I used to work at a GM dealer and we had this problem several times witht these cars 80% of the time it was the coolant temperature sensor 10% of the time it was Cam sensor and 10% of the time it was the crank sensor. I wish I could be more specific but with out actually performing test its hard to say. It is a common problem with these vehicles.

Hard starting, excessive crank time

try changing the fuel filter and turn the key on and off several times before starting engine. once running check the vaccum line on the fuel pressure regulator.the regulator can leak fuel from that connection.
