take the cluster out of dash-pull the plugs apart and re-plug a couple times, also do this with the main cpu-the connections can also corrode-and could be cleaned up-a tool to do this can be bought at an auto parts store-looks like a bunch of skinny files-

Break foult

I did the brakes on my 03 Passat about 2 years ago and the same thing happened to me. I took it to several places to have them figure it out any many wanted to charge an arm and a leg. With severe hesitation I took VW and they said it was a recall sensor item and would cost nothing to fix. So you may want to give VW a call and see if it is the same sensor issue.

Alarm going off

These had a few alarm issues, check the operation of the rear windscreen washer and make sure it works ok, sometimes the water pipe comes off inside the tailgate lid and the water gets onto the microswitch on the tailgate locking mechanism and this causes the alarm to go off

Guys, what you are experiencing is the car built warning system. When your engine light blinks it indicates a Major Problem has occurred or is occurring in the engine. When this occurs the cars goes into a "safe," mode which means all power is cut by at least half in an effort to save the car from more major damage. You can take your VW to any large chain autoparts store (autozone, advance, etc) a lot of them are offering a free engine diagnosis. Do this if possible to see where the problems maybe coming from and ways to fix them.
