Question about 1986 Cadillac DeVille

Transmission Shifting Issues

Hello All!
I recently acquired a 1986 cadillac deville with a v8 4.1L engine, automatic transmission. I was told that there were a couple of problems with the vehicle when I got it, and to which I was able verify using the info on this site.

http://www.fixya.com/cars/t592414-cadillac_problem
(tells you how to access the error code system FYI)

anyway. Here's the problem I am worried about:

One of the codes came back as FF48
(FF48- BCM to ECM Data Transfer Problem)

What the car is physically doing thats scaring me is this:

Trouble shifting at 25 and 30 mph when not fully warmed up.
also at these speeds currently the car revs up and down like a bouncing ball.

I have a suspicion that it has to do with this error. I just switched out the filter & fluids yesterday and didn't find anything out of the ordinary (although it looks like that hadn't been done in a while).

And I was told at some point mice got into the car (OH GREAT!!).

Can anyone help me to understand where the BCM and ECM are, the wires connecting these two, and to understand in general why the car is doing this.

I would be really, really greatful. This is the first real (more or less) working car I have had since my first vehicle. I would love to get this little problem fixed so I can enjoy it.

Thanks in Advance.

in the trunk? hmmm.... Can you tell me where in the trunk these are (is it up against the back seat?)? the reason why I ask is the right hand side of the trunk floor was wet when I touched after the last rain recently. I wonder if there is a short due to the leak in the trunk. (thats something else I got to fix.)

I will keep it in mind about the flushing. I may just do that since I don't want to have to replace the whole darn thing. (I don't know how to do that yet...and I say yet.) so, do I just run it a bit and then in a week or two dump the fluids again?

Thank you so much for the info, this helps me a lot so far. :)

Yeah no kidding. I definitely plan to fix that soon. I knew there had to be a reason why I kept getting fixer upers before this one. At least I know how to reseal it. (its still EVIL).

thank you for being around tonight, I can't wait to take stuff apart!

thats ok! that still tells me where things are. :)

Ecm and bcm located in trunk but what is happening will probably not show up sounds like a torque converter lock up whicxh would explain reving up and down switching out filters in a 1986 tranny need to be carful especially concidering that porbley was never down make sur eyou flushed out completely several time because if u did not you'll only get a couoke of weeks out of that tranny before it dies flushing older car trannys is dangerouse bcause of years of sludge build up around gears and vital parts flushiung will leave behind these debris and when the new fluid filters through syatem it will break up causing huge probems so keep that in mind but this could be a simple sensor issue

in trunk behind the passanger seat water gettig in could be a problem but it is more likely to be a mechanical problem not a modular problem considering the year of the vehicle gm was very precuse with their cadilaccs and very ahead of their times but there are not as many electroice compnents in an 86 that there are in the early modkles up until now but i would fix that leak because at some point it will be an issue

  • joesavv63 Feb 10, 2009

dont get too excited i appologize for the misleading info actually your vehicle is not equipped with a bcm only ecc engine control comput same sam ecm but it is not located in the trunk it is located in the Front seating area, passenger side, under dash, above kick panel, mounted on firewall sorry about that i had my years mixed up 96 and up is located in trunk

Cadillac has stopped shifting into passing mode. Otherwise accelerates normally through all gears.

The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems ca cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms

Yes i have a 96 cadillac deville i just bought i cant feel it shifting. It goes right into gear and goes down the road but dont feel it shifting.

Try manually shifting it and see if you can feel it shifting. You should be able to.Then just drive it in drive light normal and see if you can feel it.Usually you will get a check engine light or have the transmission codes checked if you do feel it.Sometimes these transmissions are very smooth.Hope this helps.
