1997 diesel suburban steering goes left

1997 4x4 Diesel Suburban driving at any speed will suddenly veer to the left, I have to hold the steering wheel the other way to compansate, after slowing right down and making a hard right turn there is a loud clunk and the steering go straight again. I have changed the steering column sensor. A friend suggest that the 4 wheel drive is trying to engage? Help please Cheers Doug

I doubt it's your 4x4. Most transfer case will start turning the front driveshaft, meaning that BOTH front wheels would try to turn.

Could be a brake pad/caliper locking up on your left wheel. That'll make that wheel turn slower resulting in the veering left.

Could also be a wheel bearing. However usually you'll hear a grinding noise to go along with that. And it'll pull rather consistently in that direction rather than suddenly.

Or, what first comes to mind is that your steering box is loose, or the gear inside the steering box is stripped in one spot. Or your front tie rods could be shifting or possibly ball joints. These would cause a sudden shifting/veering.

All of these things are front end related. And also very dangerous. Take it down to any alignment shop, have them put it on a lift, and diagnose immediately.

Worse case scenerio is that a front end part breaks and sends you out of control and into someone else. Please get it checked. A diesel Suburban could do a lot of damage.

What size engine do you have in your Suburban?

About 99% of them had the 5.7 liter V-8 engine with 255 horsepower.

Approximately 1% had the 6.5 liter turbo-diesel with 190 horsepower.

The 2500 suburban has an option for a 7.4 liter gasoline engine with 290 horsepower.

1987 Chevy Suburban with 6.2L diesel shakes at certain speeds.

Sounds like you may have a loose motor mount. I would check these as well as any that support the transmission.

If this doesn't seem to be the issue, try replacing the fuel filter, glow plugs, and make sure all vacuum lines are connected and in good repair.

Help...94 Suburban 1500 auto 4x4, I am changing

I'm pretty sure GM built your truck with the diesel engine as an option so there is a way to make this work. The trans shifts are based on a combination of ground speed and engine RPM so as long as the computer is able to get these signals your trans should work. I put an early 90's overdrive in a mid 80's truck and didn't plug the wiring in because the trans used a 4 wire plugin and my truck only had a 3 wire. It worked fine, even overdrive.
A little jury rigging and ingenuity should find a way to attach your current kickdown cable to the accellerator on the diesel pump. GM probably has a bracket to make it fit. Check with the parts guys at the counter. Hope this helps.

It sounds like it could also be the connection-check the wires going to it and the ground wire on the battery itself.
