Question about 2002 Ford Thunderbird

1 Answer

Curb idle on 2002 Thunderbird wanders between 850-1000 rpm

In drive rpm about 750-850 rpm. All readings are from cars stock tach. Tends to hold the high rpm during coast down, surges then drops suddenly after stopping then fluctuates at idle. PCM was reprogrammed about 6 months ago which did improve the condition. Symptoms have returned although to a lesser degree

When coming to a stop, the tach drops below 1000 RPM, then will recover to Idle RPM. However, sometimes it will stall out. I believe the Idle should be adjusted to around 1000 rpm, instead of the current...

indicates that the ratios are not shifting on deceleration

How do i set the timeing

There is NO manual timing adjustment for the ignition. It is controlled by the knock sensor and the computer. If you need the timing marks for the timing belt, please respond and I will send it to you. If not, what kind kinds of problems are you experiencing?

RPM is over 400 rpm higher than it should be with no gas pedal.

Could be several things.. I would suggest replace the neutral safety switch, all O2 sensors and fuel and air filters, PVC valve and if needed plugs n wires..
The issue could also be a bad throttle body.. Should be a good idea to get it hooked up to a diagnostic machine - get the codes and then you will know more of what you are dealing with..

Have a great day !!

Need adjustments for 88 model carter 2 barrel carburator. fits 4.2 jeep

To set carb adjustment, first set timing correctly, then put both a vacuum gauge and tach on the engine. adjust one idle screw to highest vacuum reading and highest tach reading, then do the other one. go back to the first and re-adjust again, then the other. I find that if you have a mechanical screw or a solenoid that holds idle speed on the linkage, turn them back so that engine is idling at the lowest possible rpm without stalling before making adjustments, then when finished, bring idle rpm up to recommended rpm using those. On an older carb, usually the idle screw covers have already been removed. If not, you need to remove them before you begin, usually best done with carb on a bench.
