87 Ford Ranger, starter not engaging brand new one

Replaced the started was running fine, then we get the grinding and cracking, and it won't start is there a special way the starter has to be aligned? How do you know if you installed it correctly? Help.

Well the starter will only really fit one way did all the bolts go in was the sheild that goes between the starter and trans in place it should fit flush top and bottom and there should be no gaps did you bend or misalign the torque converter sheild/cover good luck

Truck turns over and starts when I connect battery???? No key is even in the ignition.

Maybe the ignition is bad- or your starter solenoid stuck in engaged position?

When I turn my ignition to start my 87 ford ranger the starter spins but doesn't catch the flywheel. I replaced the solenoid and checked the grounds but it still does the same thing. I just replaced...

If you have tested the starter, and it is installed correctly, and it spins, my guess would be missing teeth on the flywheel.
A Ford starter needs 11 volts to engage so you could check to make sure you have that at the starter cable post.
You could also turn the crank a few degrees to see if the flywheel is warped or damaged.

1965 mustang starter fires but won't engage flywheel. it is a brand new starter

Doesn't matter. The forks inside the starter may be missing or broke off or bad spring in starter that pushes the gear out. Try new started. Starter may have to be shimmed to make contact with flywheel. Starter may be kicking out but not engaging flywheel.

High pitch noise when turn key to start / engine not turning over

Check your battery first. Cold weather does horrible things to car batteries... if it's more of a grinding sound I would say that your starter gear is bad. I believe they call it a ring gear? I had a similar problem with a kushman scooter that I use to deliver snowcones through the neighborhoods. It has teeth that need to engage and if those teeth have been grinded down it will have a hard time engaging....

Did you get the right starter? Did you put the starter straight? Did you lock the screw evenly? where this noise from? You mentioned the noise like high pitch grinding noise, is it from the starter area or flying wheel?
