'99 olds 88 diagnosed PO 446 evap vent control problem
Went in for emission check on '99 olds 88. Engine light was on so had to run diagnostics. Came up with PO 446 evap vent control problem. Was told had to take it to a dealer. Any other ideas or if I could fix? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
a 6ya Mechanic can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

you have something allowing the gas fumes to leak out of your emission system is what code po422 means if you replaced your gas cap and this code came back after resetting your check engine light then some where in the vent line between the fuel tank and the intake there is a leak that is allowing the gas tank to depressurize which will turn on the light and cause your cars ecm or computer to go into (limp mode) this is a preset program which allows the driveline to operate at a non optimum setting or diagnostic setting meaning it will get lousy gas mileage until repairs are made and the problem is fixed as far as being safe to drive it could be very dangerous depending on how bad the leak is and weather the car has exhaust leaks also you are dealing with gas fumes closed in say like parking in a garage where these fumes can build up it can be very dangerous if enough fumes build up in such a instance out in the open not very bad at all
These codes usually trigger the check engine light to ON if the car is fueled or fuel tank cap is removed with the engine in start position.
To delete the codes, remove the key from ignition, remove the battery negative terminal for 5 Seconds or more. Reconnect the battery terminal, start the engine, let it idle for 10 minutes. Error Code:P 0446 Description:
Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System, Vent Control - Circuit Malfunction Possible Cause:
Evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve.
Engine control module (ECM).
P0446 has nothing to do with the canistor !
DTC P0446 Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Vent System Performance
This DTC tests the evaporative emission (EVAP) system for a restricted or blocked EVAP vent path. The control module commands the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve Open and the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve Closed. This allows vacuum to be applied to the EVAP system. Once a calibrated vacuum level has been reached, the control module commands the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve Closed and the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve Open. The control module monitors the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor for a decrease in vacuum. If the vacuum does not decrease to near 0 inches H2O in a calibrated time, this DTC sets.
DTC P0452 Fuel Tank Pressure (FTP) Sensor Circuit Low Voltage
Hi there: This indicates that a part of the EVAP control system is no longer functioning correctly. The EVAP system consists of many parts, including (but not limited to) the gas cap, fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valve, and other hoses. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.
I suggest replacing the gas cap with preferably one from the Nissan dealer, or OEM equivalent, then clear these codes by disconnecting the negative battery cable for about a minute then drive it normally; if the codes come back, this may take a couple of days, you most likely have to have the system tested for leaks.
Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.
NOPE CANT ERASE CODES UNTIL THE PROBLEM IS FIXED OR THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT SOON WILL STAY ON. CODE PO441 - EVAPORATIVE EMISSION EVAP SYSTEM INCORRECT FLOW DETECTED.CHECK INTAKE VACUUM HOSE CONNECTIONS AT THE EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE.IF ALL IS GOOD.THE EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE COULD BE BAD. CODE PO 442 - EVAPORATIVE EMISSION EVAP SYSTEM SMALL LEAK DETECTED. EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LARGE LEAK DETECTED FUEL CAP LOOSE OR OFF MISSING. CODE PO 446 - EVAPORATIVE EMISSION EVAP SYSTEM VENT CONTROL CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION.
most common is to check that ur gas cap is tight and or needs replacement 442 evap emissions control system leak detected [small] 446 is evap emissions control system vent control circuit malfunction the gas cap will set off these codes if cap is good need to then check the fuel and vent lines for cracked or dried out or partial disconnection
