Can not shift to reverse/park

Transmission is probably out or on the verge of going out. Or if it is an automatic and the shifter lever itself is hard to move first check transmission and then check gears and components inside steering column.

Can't shift into reverse.

There is a brake lamp switch located on the brake pedal itself, this also works as the shift lock release.

Trans in park computor read out on dash reads it is in drive

You most likley have a bent/damaged shifter cable. Unhook it at the trans, and move the linkage, with the park brake set. Push it all the way forward, that is park. The display should change and it should start. If so you will need the cable. Good Luck

When i try to move my 1998 chevy cavalier from park to drive, it either stops at neutral or stays stuck on reverse or park, but the lever still moves back and forth it just wont shift gears.

Checked the cable from the shifter to the transmission? They often stretch or break & become difficult to move Or fail to move lever on transmission properly.

1988 Jaguar xj6 No forward in the automatic trans rev works fine

the linkage is just a slight bit off, it parks between gears when you shift into the slots. Disassemble the shifter from the center console, and slowly move just the cable its self between the positions and see if you have forword gears. When you find and sync the gears, then tighten the cable to the shifter so the positions match the notches in the shifter.

Automatic transmission won't reverse or goes into drive

If I understand your description and you can't get automatic trans shifter out of park:
ignition switch has a saftey feature to prevent you from shifting out of park unless key is turned on, I suspect your cable is broken, damaged or just not attached at the ignition switch end.  It's attached via cable that goes from ignition switch to shifter console.
So normally you need key on and foot on brake to get out of park, there is a mechanism in shift console to prevent going into drive if conditions are not met, I think your problems lie here.
