1)Detach the negative battery terminal.

2) Working from above the engine, remove upper mounting bolt and nut to starter.
(Access is accomplished this way: stand on driver-side fender and look down at brake fluid reservoir. Just below and beyond the brake reservoir you will see a vent hose. Disconnect hose & remove. Now you will see the starter motor from above view. You will be able to see a mounting bolt and a nut connecting starter to engine just above the starter (facing brake reservoir).
Remove (1) bolt & (1) nut first, then raise vehicle and suport on jackstands. Then go underneath the vehicle and remove the remaining lower mounting bolt (1) on the starter.
Label wires then detach them from starter. Now you can remove the starter. If you find it a tight squeeze, you may want to remove or swing the transaxle on that side for additional access, although that is not mentioned in manual (but I did it). It just gives you more room, but does not seem absolutely necessary.

3) Installation is reverse of removal.

Thanks for using FixYa. Your Rating of my solution to your problem was THANKS FOR TRYING. I would appreciate a re-evaluation of your rating - as the answer I gave was correct. There are not many experts that provide answers to FREE questions beacuse anything under HELPFUL reduces their overall rating percentage.

The description FixYa uses for the rating system is misleading - a THANKS FOR TRYING means the answer was not helpful in solving your problem.

We are working toward a better rating description to help alleviate the bad ratings.

I took the time and answered your question to the best of my ability and request a change to at least HELPFUL.

    Thank you.

Taken from Haynes repair manual. I used these instructions myself to replace starter motor on my 1989 Dodge Spirit after nearly going berserk at three attempts to remove it without wanting to look it up in book.

How to time an engine in a 1989 dodge spirit

You need to use a strobe light to set the timing. The timing mark of the crank /flywheel is marked and so the strobe must be triggered from the first plug.
The changes on the timing can be adjusted on the distributor to set the timing to coincide with the correct mark specified as the stobe flashes to show the mark being constant.

Remove the tranny dipstick & use a long funnel to access the opening to fillup to the proper level. It is front to drivers side down low. Good luck!
