Re: need to pull and reed trouble codes for a 1989 honda
There is a jumper wire on the passenger side kick panel, short this wire with a paper clip and turn your ignition to run, the CEL check engine light will flash the number of the trouble code,
long flashes = 10's
short flashes = 1's
so a code read like this
would be 35
there will be short pauses between flashes and a long pause between separate codes,
hope this helps

If the check engine light is on, you need to scan the computer for trouble codes next. The codes may direct you to the problem area. You can research "GM trouble codes" online to get the procedure and the meaning of the codes you retrieve.
You will have to get the trouble codes read from your car, to know exactly what is causing the check engine light to illuminate and the rough idle. Most major auto parts stores will read the codes and give you a report printed out, for free.
Not yet. The check engine light coming on is letting you know that the self diagnostic function of the engine computer has detected a problem and set a trouble code. That code can be read by a code reader. Most major auto parts stores have these code readers and will read your code for free. The code number can tell you/us where to start looking for the problem.
Could have a bad injector or PSM problem. When idle is bad start pulling each spark plug one at a time , if no change then thats the bad cylinder. Could be a spark plug too. Buy a spark plug wire puller to do this job (plastic only and only use one hand)
have you had the the engine codes pulled and reset?
and if so what are your engine codes?
i dont know of any car that will pass emissions test with the engine light on.
we cure your trouble that caused your engine light to come on and you will pass your test.
If your engine light is on, then that means there is a trouble code stored in the cars computer. Could be anything, and you will not know what it is until you get the code read. A lot of chain auto parts stores such as Advance auto parts or Autozone will read the code for you at no charge. I would try that first, and that will let you know what the problem is, and what to expect needs to be fixed. If you do not have one of those stores near you, look for any auto parts store that offers a free code read diagnostic. Hope this helps. Please repost a comment if you need additional assistance.
