Gas Tank Leak when Filling / Check Engine Light due to Vapor Leak" I'm reading these gas tank filling issues on the 04 Avalanche, I've had them too. Now another issue; when you fill the truck and "top it off" (fill it all the way up to the top of the filler receptacle), gas leaks out of the top of the tank. You can't see where it's coming from but it leaks down the driver's side of the gas tank, coming from the top. This strated several months ago with a check engine light that couldn't be cleared (the code on the re-check device says "fuel system vapor leak". You can clear it with the analyzer, but it will come back on and saty on. I'm hoping that the issue is due to the clogged vent selenoid mentioned by Jeremy, and that it's not going to require dropping the tank.

It may just be the fuel pump seal at the top of the tank. it has to be dropped for a definite diagnosis. It is rare but the tank seams occasionally crack too. Good luck.

SOURCE: 78 VW camper has Gas leak after filling tank, other side of the

I had the same problem as this. There is a pipe that runs from the petrol tank around and up into the air inlet shaft under the spare wheel well. I am not sure exactly what it does I think it has an expansion valve on it. There is a join in this between two tubes that join. This is a simple piece of fuel tube with an internal dimension of say 5mm. If you feel your hand into that air shaft there, locate the fuel tube feel your way along the pipe, you will find the join. Just pull the old one out and put a new piece in. Very simple. really

SOURCE: GMC Jimmy gas filler neck leak

Replace your filler neck. It's not hard and when you buy the new one, installation should be obvious and rather straight forward.

A fuel leak is not something to take lightly and it will get worse over time.

Most fuel systems are pressurized (that's why you'll sometimes hear a hissing sound when you open your cap) so if your filler neck is leaking it can throw a code.

I cant get more then 1 gallon of gas in my fuel tank on my 2000 ford windstar what could be wrong?

ive seen this happen on new cars , but not on a 2k model , but might be same cause , if you do a code check you might see a vac canister fail on the readout , all new cars have a vapor recovery system that recovers the fuel vapor inside tank and burns it in engine , the vapors are collected in a canister then pulled into engine and burned off , this gets clogged up sometimes and needs replacement , the new gas pump nozzles have what is called a closed loop system , they need to sense a no pressure backfeed from gas tank when filling it in order to work , long and the short of it , gas nozzle won;t allow fuel in if vapor in tank builds up from a backed up canister

Check engine light/evap leak

Getting a smoke test is the right direction to go in.
The computer vents the gas tank to the vapor canister while the engine is running. It also pressure tests the system for leaks. Some where between the gas tank and the vapor canister there may be a leaking hose or valve. Or it could be the gasket on top of the tank where the pump assembly went in.
The gas cap could have been a source for the leak, the other things are not involved.

Gas tank not filling when filling the gas tank the pump keeps kicking off every $1-2. It is like the tank is vapor locking. What is the problem and how do i fix it. It's on a 2008 dodge ram 1500

There is a fuel vapor recovery device inside the tank that affects fill rate if it malfunctions, it takes the dealer to diagnose it and only the dealer has the parts to fix it.

Gas comes out when filling fuel tank and not full also engine light has come on with a p1450 code kicked light off and it stayed off

When filling your tank, if the fill hose kicks off and/or gas kicks back up the tube it's an indication that the evaporative emissions vent tube is plugged, the cannister vent valve is not working correctly, or that there is a restriction in the fill pipe/hose. Unless the tank or pipe was recently worked on or part of an accident, you can eliminate it. I've found several concerns involing the vent tube and cannister vent valve. Spiders like to make webs inside of these items and the web blocks the air from escaping. When you fill your tank, the air inside needs to go somewhere. If it can't escape, it will cause the gas to back up and shut off the fill handle or kick gas back. There are ways to check this function with a scan tool and pressure machine but you can also do a visual inspection by disconnecting the valve and looking for webs or debris. You can also run water though the open line or blow shop air though to be sure it's clear. The P1450 is an evaporative emission code and is probably related to the filling concern but could also be a seperate issue. If the concern is not obvious, you will need to have an auto tech hook up a scan tool and perform a pressure test while monitoring the fuel tank pressure sensor. Basic diagnosis is 1.0 0 1.5 hours multiplied br the shops hourly rate. Ex: 1.5 hr. X $100.00 = $150.00 diag charge.

I recently had the electrical system repaired. since then I have experienced a strong smell of gasoline when the car is running and when it is just sitting in the driveway. There does not appear to be...

there is no connection to these two issues that would make any sense-the strong gas smell can be due to over filling the gas tank, it can and often does back up into the charcoal canister that is supposed to only contain vapor. when you fill the tank, it is best to allow the automatic shutoff feature of the gas pump to activate ending the filling process. the tendency to 'top off' can cause the symptoms you are describiing

You can smell gas all around the car, but cannot tell that any gas is leaking. The vapor canister looks fine, but can see gas below the engine on the tyrod connector.

Check fuel lines that run up side of engine. Lots of times they can chaffe against block and leak. Also be careful when filling car, if you top tank to top of fill neck that puts pressure on lines to canister where canister will fill w/fuel and literally ruin vapor canister.

Try filling up a little less. To me it sounds like a vapor lock issue which clears after you burn off the top bit of gas.. Next time you need fuel up be sure to keep track of how much you put in. Another idea is to run the tank down and then only fill up to half a tank. If the problem clears then you know that you're having a vapor issue probably due to gas saturation of the canister (which can happen if you overfill the tank).

Car won't start after filling up the gas tank.

Just helped a friend fix this exact same issue on his 2004 hyundai santa fe. Replaced the purge control valve - a $39 part, even from the dealer. Had to get our hands dirty, but it took literally one single hour to replace the part. Filled it up immediately afterward and no more starting problems. Part is located directly behind the manifold - top, rear of the engine compartment - just between the engine

After filling up the fuel tank (tank was low on gas), engine light comes steady on. After about ten minutes driving the vehicle and atempting to stop engine stold and battery light would come on.

battery light will come on when engine stalls but should go out when engine is restarted.
suspect dirt in fuel system sucked up by low fuel level from fuel tank engine ligth may have been indication of fuel starvation.
if not then
suspect battery is not being charged properly
check battery condition
check that generator is charing battery.
to test battery try starting the engine with lights on if battery is low the engine will not turn and the lights will dim.

Check engine light comes on after refueling the vhicle. gauge doesn't read full, then it will. light goes out after a day or two.

Also, be sure to not over-fill the gas tank. When filling the tank, when it sounds full (you can hear gas gush up the filler neck) and when the filler clicks off the first time...don't be tempted to keep clicking more gas into the tank because over-filling can cause a variety of problems (including setting the light) and can eventually saturate/ruin the fuel vapor canisters.
