Noisy shocks & struts

Most likely you will need to change them out, try pushing down on the car and if it bounces more than once they are worn, if not then it might be a different problem, like control arm bushings, or strut mounts

Doeds a 1997 ford explorer have front shocks or struts?

My 1997 Ford Explorer AWD has shocks in the front.

Also, if yours has shocks, be certain you get replacement shocks for AWD/4WD and not 2WD versions. They are not the same; the 2WD shocks have a longer body/shorter rod that will rub on the drive shaft--at least until they are sufficient bent/dented to clear the shaft (at which time they may not be working so well any longer, having leaked...) ;-)

Od light blinking sometimes on a 98 mountaineer awd

It means that your transmission is going to be having some problems. When mine did it in my van, the only thing the owners manual said about it was take it to the dealership for servicing.
