Question about 2004 Oldsmobile Alero
The Security System keeps shutting down the cars ignition system. What would cause that I;ve been doing this also. I just bought an2004 Alero last week and the guy from the dealership said this might happen every now and then. Well to my surprise.. it happened to me today. I turned it on and my car didn't start so I left the key in for four minutes like I was told to do.. but I ended waiting for 10 minutes instead. But it started right away. I waited for the security light to stop flashing and turned the key back and turned the car on and it started. I just wanted to share this info with someone. It does work, but I don't know for how long..it's kind of annoying to sit there waiting..
The most common cause of this is the key, to check this use another working key, if the problem persists the ignition lock cylinder sensor is defective and the lock cylinder must be replaced, the dealer will need to do this as the security system must be re-programed to accept the new key code.

SOURCE: Diagnostic code p0442
Hi, a P0442 is Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak). Start with the simplest thing first, make sure the gas cap is on tight. If it is, replace it with a new GM part (not a cheap aftermarket one). If that doesn't fix it, there are more steps listed here:
