1999 Ford Windstar

My engine light started flashing and engine started running rough . I could smell kind of a rotten egg sulfary smell inside the van when it started .
When outside of the van by the exhaust you could smell it really bad . I still had 90 miles to go and it made it home but when I would stop at a light it would feel like it was going to stall but it didn't .
There was no overheating , just shaking when you step on the gas . HELP !!

It probably is the catalytic converter.

The catalytic converter was one of the greatest emission control inventions in the history of monitoring carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. It starts in the engine, but the catalytic converter is the last stop for exhaust gases and the last chance to launder that nasty air before it shoots into the atmosphere, and our noses . How It Works, Basically: Your catalytic converter is a magical hot box. Ok, it's not magic, but it sounds magical the first time you hear how it works. Hot exhaust gases exit your engine and head through your exhaust to the catalytic converter. Inside this expanded tube is a massive network or honeycomb of ceramics. This ceramic checkpoint has been coated with compounds that react with the exhaust to eliminate certain harmful emissions. Even though the exhaust is flying through the tube at high velocity, the molecules that coat the ceramics are able to react in milliseconds, hanging on to the bad stuff until it's converted to something harmless (or less harmful) like Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide or water vapor.

That smell means your converter is in fact working. and working HARD. something causes your converter to go bad. it never just dies.
the rough running is most likely the problem. a clogged converter will cause a huge loss of power. the smell is usually due to a rich condition usually a missfire. converters are expensive. if you dont have the tools to scan the code to assist in finding problems there is not much people can do on here to help you.

If you change the converter only you will have another bad one shortly. Trust me people do this all the time. its a waste of money not fixing the rough running first. converter gets changed ONCE EVERYTHING ELSE HAS been fixed.

    SMELL MEANS its still working!

Hi, Sounds like the catalytic converter is shot. It needs to go to the shop to have it checked. Best of luck to you!

My 2005 chevy malibus check engine light came on it's running really rough. It also smell like rotten eggs. I have tried the gas cap thing and checked all thefluid levels and still nothing

its your alternator voltage regular failed and your alternator is isnt being limited to 12 vots and its overpowering your electric system. the smell of rotten eggs is your battery over heating and the acid inside is boiling giving off the sulfur based smell. this is unhealthy for you to breath and is a sure sign that your car needs to be repaired. you need to replace your alterantor and battery immeditly or it coud damage your vehicals computer. The new altenator will have a new regulator in it and you will be good.

Usually the rotten egg smell is a clogged CAT. Is the engine light on and if so did you retrieve any codes?

Smells like rotten eggs.engine misfiring.

Probably the EGR valve is bad. That is generally the cause of the smell.

Engine light

The "rotten-egg" smell is caused indirectly by the catalytic converter. The main cause is a rich mixture condition from the engine. Your SUV is equipped with a computer controlled engine management system. You can scan your computer for fault or error codes. The information should pinpoint the malfunctioning components. There is an alternate reason for the rotten egg smell. this also can be caused by a over charged battery. if so, make sure the alternator isn't overcharging the battery cell. it will boil the contents causing the egg smell. I recommend a diagnostic run to make sure what this problem is.

please rate and god bless.

I need a list of the EGR/Trouble codes for a 1994 Ford SHO Taurus

Sounds like the catalytic converter has gone bad. What happens is you car as you drive will lose power, smell like rotten eggs and stall out. The reason is, the cat. is plugged up and cannot let the exhaust out of the tail pipe like it should. The exhaust is staying in the engine causing it to stall out and loose pwer.
